Why losing weight can cause hair loss

Beyond shedding pounds, rapid weight loss can also reduce muscle mass and bone density, and contribute to nutritional deficiencies if your diet isn't well balanced. What you might not realise, however, is that it can also lead to temporary hair loss.

I was seriously ill from February to May this year, and my hair has been falling out these past 2 months. I lost 20 lbs in weight because of the illness, so I am hoping my hair will grow back after reading this article. Thanks for the explanation.

Hi Ruth, I hope you’re feeling much better now. I’m not a doctor but I have experienced hair loss due to a physical/mental illness (ED) but I can’t say much more about it because a lot of forms ban or censor users who mention ED’s.

That being said, I’m not a doctor but I’ve spent a long time working with psychiatrists, therapists, and nutritionists during my recovery.

When I read this article, from everything I’ve learned it doesn’t seem to apply to someone like you or myself. We’ve experienced hair loss due to illness rather than a side effect of medication.

To quote the article: “However, hair loss is thought to be linked to rapid weight loss itself, rather than the medications.”

The rapid weight loss is a side effect of the GLP-1 medications. So the statement is misleading and redundant.

My doctors and nutritionist who’ve supported me during my recovery have always recommended eating a small amount at least every three hours. And to make sure that I’m getting my essential nutrients from the foods I’m eating instead of relying on supplements.

Supplements are fine, but your best source of nutrition comes from the food you eat and treating your body well.

My hair is much healthier now years after hitting rock bottom with my ED. I also use Nioxin shampoo and conditioner. They can be really pricey but sometimes you can find a set at TJmaxx or similar stores at a good price!

I truly hope that you’ve recovered well from your illness. I know it’s so hard to lose your hair, it will grow back, but it’s a long process. Focus on your physical and mental health and the rest will come later. You’re strong and you will make it through this.
