2 days post-op THR

Hey everyone

Well it's been two days for me and it's been an interesting experience. I figured I'd write about it and put some people's minds at ease if they are having a hip replacement done.

I had to come in a day before my surgery to get settled in and I'm glad I did, otherwise I'd have been a wreck emotionally, but it went pretty well. I only really started to panic when I saw some light blood splatter on the operating theaters ceiling. They tried to give me a regional anasthesia, but that didn't work for some reason, so they gave me the usual general. I was out like a light, but I do remember them smacking me awake. Or at least that's how it felt.

I spent an hour in the recovery room before they moved me and needless to say I was extremely careful not to move my leg. Another hour later I was cracking jokes with the nurse in the ICU. Pain was surprisingly non-existant and yeah I know its the pain meds, but I really was very comfortable.

Until I had to go to the bathroom. Going number one was easy and I figured that the physio therapist would show up in no time to get me up and to the bathroom to go number two. Nope. It was a friday and apparently he doesnt work on the weekend. So I felt a tinge of panic.

The whole weekend I was more worried about my intestines than my leg. I even asked the nurses for help but all they could offer was the bedpan and I felt a little weak to use it. Finally it was my roommate who had just gotten his second hip done and knew all about getting up. He got me a walker, got me on my feet and to the bathroom. I am so grateful to that man, now I can finally focus on recovery.

Sorry if it came off as a rant, I just wanted to get some thoughts off my mind.

Hi Fredk. Pleased to hear your op went well. I think we've all had thea toilet worries prior toto going into hospital.

I couldn't get on with the bed pans at all and was really pleased when I could walk to the toilet. Following my THR I passed gallons of fluid, not sure where it all came from. Luckily I don't get embarrassed easily and the nurses have seen it all anyway. Hope your recovery continues well :-)

Hi , i am three days post op ..had op Thursday came out friday ...as you say no1 are easy but no 2 no chance still ...and like you i am more concerned about going at the moment lol ...

Yeah, I was shocked by that too. And I only had a .75 liters of water after the surgery.

9 days post op..

My first #2 was day 4.

My second #2 was day 6...

Changed (increased) my pain meds a couple days ago so I'm not too surprised in in my recent/current delay. Added MiraLax, to my current meds which included a stool softener (Senna) and a daily laxative that helped in the beginning... last nights dose didn't help this morning taking MiraLax again soon....

Hi

Sorry to say I don't know what hospital you where in bur if I was you it would be a nice letter to the head of that hospital informing him/her of how you where treated.

Hope your recovery goes.better then what you have been through so far.

Hopefully you will never have to go back there again.

Barbara

Glad you're doing ok, can't believe the nursing staff weren't able to get you to the bathroom....

They always had something else to do. That or they had the memory of a goldfish. Either way it was ridiculous.

I hope everything's going better for you now. How has it been navigating life outside of the hospital? I assume you're on crutches.
