Hi I had TRH last Tuesday on nhs but at private hospital which was brill. I got use hydrotherapy pool which was amazing. All good . Came home 2 days after surgery and can't believe as a health professional myself (also previously worked in OT) just how naive I was post surgery as to how much the op restricts What you can manage ! This lead to complete meltdown yesterday due to frustration and generally feeling sorry for myself. I am very independent person and a "doer" so my advice to anyone awaiting op replan your house ! Very frustrating if you are cold and remember your jumpers in drawer under bed and you can't bend down to open it ! Small things but add to post op blues wobbling around on crutches perching you self on raised toilet seat blah blah = boo hoo !Also whilst hospital were brill checking my equipment etc at home was not . Toilet seat issued was poor quality and slipped while I was sat on !! Thankfully didn't fall off . So if your hospital hasn't advised you on pre admission do it yourself chair loo bed height etc .Move things around as bending is a no no . Great forum hearing others . I am also getting lot of knee pain today seems to change daily . Hopefully no meltdown today as my sister came and sorted me drawers yesterday Ooh er ! Not literally
Hey Swindon, keep the faith, it does change daily, often two steps forward and one step back. I had 'Weepy Wednesday' when I realised just how big and brutal this op is.
This is my motto "Get through the rubbish first two weeks and you're on the home run"
After two weeks things get an awful lot better but when you are feeling low, frustrated, angry and helpless just remember that you have just had the top of your femur removed and a spike hammered into it. Congratulate yourself on every little victory and read a this forum. I am 7 weeks and am driving and walking unsupported for short distances.
By the way, I fell asleep on my nice raised toilet seat and I am never going to live it down!!!
Hi Kate thanks for positive reply . My mum had her hip a year ago and her recovery was amazing! But when you are in it Hmm somehow not the same . Love the sleep on loo seat moment classic . My first night home post catheter removal and bursting for wee I wobbled down to loo (further than I thought ) good job loo in utility room with washing machine ! Note to self !! Allow more time !
It will get better very quickly... Week 1 I was in despair. Now week 3 (just) and the difference is amazing. Hang in there and take each day at a time. Keep a diary and you will see how you are progressing even if it doesn't feel that way
Keep going and take care

Ha love you humour!
Remember that it's not just the hip that is in major shock, it's also our brains. Those first two weeks (as mentioned) are hell no doubt. I just took it one day at a time and when people let me down on some level (e.g. my girlfriend) I simply said to self, she doesn't understand the enormity of the situation. Keep focussed on recovery and you will get great results.
I am not even week 7 post a posterior HR and walking unaided and working my farm. Isn't life wonderful?
Thanks I am noticing things improve already ! Sometimes you just having bad day and yesterday for me it was just that ! I am positive person in life too so I think pma is also a great help in recovery . Glad you doing so well keep it it and keep me posted as you a little ahead of me . Sun shining today so my mum and I off for little walk in bit.
Denise
Hi Andy great recovery good on you ! Hmm as nhs worker on full sick pay I'm hoping to be off considerably longer than 7 weeks !!! Don't think anyone understands hip replacement unless they have had one . Keep up the good work but don't over do it . Now I need to kick the cat off and struggle to my beautiful new bathroom accessory and get up and dressed .
Denise
Hah, that's the bit I wasn't expecting - thank God for laminate flooring, eh! Btw, that bit gets better, but slowly.
I think being a positive person helps a lot and remembering that rest is important as trying to get your independence back.
Oh and while you are sat on yer bum, give the RNLI a little tinkle - Cornwall is drowning today, we are going to slip off the end!
I too worked with people with disabilities but had no notion of how big an op this was despite being told so by consultant. I was lucky to find this forum pre op although my family were saying get off that site its stressing you out. Yet when I came out of hospital they were surprised how much prep I had done. Some said they fell asleep on loo. Sell first day I sat on OT chair I fell asleep and felt myself sliding off. I had some of that sticky mesh for under mats and put that on it I also put it on the perching stool. About bending , as soon as you feel confident you can bend by putting op leg back and bending non op knee. You need something sturdy to hold on to. Ps DRAWERS of all sorts can be a problem post the. Hang on in there!
great post !!
welcome to our hippie family -
I didn't find this forum until 3 weeks post op - so yeah, lots of issues after i was discharged - did have the raised toilet seat and had pots and pans on top of the stove - also was advised to get remote controle for light switches (all outlets are ground level) and a grabber -
I don't know for sure if the "allowing more time" to go to the loo is a post THR surgery issue but still have to be mindful ....
Sounds that ou are doing great - one day, one step at a time and taking your time with it -
be gentle and kind to your self -
love and laughter

Hi Denise
I think you need to see getting back to work as a positive move and not delay getting back to normal life just because you get full pay on the sick...which incidentally is paid for by people like me....
Take care

Hi with ref time off work ! that was actually a tongue in cheek statement from a dedicated over worked under paid professional nhs staff member who tailored op round my patients from a very busy understaffed department !! Hence mentally I agree however physically top form required to perform my job safely .
Great advice . Hey the grabber ! A whole other subject! Fantastic and love to challenge myself already as to how small an item I can pick up . ! Had laugh with my daughter earlier trying to remove chocolate mint from box with it ! Now true after eights obviously in wrapper but these were tesco own brand .... very difficult indeed ! God I need to get a life !!
