I am 3 and half weeks on from my op and still need crutches all the time. I've tried to take a single step without having one crutch but it just doesn't happen. I'm scared I'll be like it forever!I have had to phone up my doctor to ask for physio as I've been left to my own devices since coming out of hospital. I can't get into bed on my own. I can't even get out the front door. I feel like a prisonor in effect and it's driving me into a frenzy. Then last night my thigh in my op leg started to go number on the front and side it got so bad I went to bed after 10 mins it started burning as if I'm fire but felt fine to touch I had to take oramorph to get to sleep. Today it's still semi numb what the blazes happened??? Please help?
Hi Angela, sorry that you're not progressing as fast as you had hoped. Just take it steadily, everyone is different. The first few weeks are the worst, so soon you should see some more improvement. I'm sorry that you're having more pain. Maybe you should see your GP next week?
Wishing you all the best, Judith
(Ps, your crutch should be in the opposite hand to your hip. But you probably know that already!)
I am just four weeks from my surgery and as Julie says, take it easy. I have to see my surgeon in three weeks and he told me not to leave off the crutches until after he has seen me. I might then progress to one crutch. I have a slight difficulty as my non-operated leg is 35 mm shorter than the operated side, so I am making do with insoles and heel lefts in the short leg. I wake up in the morning with a bit of pain but it goes away after I do the recommended exercises. These are important to do. You need to keep taking regular painkillers to help you mantain your exercise programme. Walking will help get the swelling down. My surgeon told me it was the best physiotherapy. I have booked in with my local physiotherapist and she has reviewed my exercise programme and I will see her again after my meeting with my surgeon early next month.
We all heal differently. I used one crutch for 6 weeks then a cane for a bit. It all takes a bit of time. Please be gentle with yourself and your recovery. People on this forum are a great connection and great resource.
Good morning Angela. 3 weeks is still too soon after this major surgery So much is still healing and will be for awhile. Don't be to hasty in leaving your crutches just yet. It will all come in due time. Exercises are a big help so hopefully you can start that soon. I believe there are some online that you can do as I've heard people on this forum mention. But getting a physical therapist will be beneficial for you. Wishing you all the best for a speedy recovery and healing. Remember take it slow and be kind to yourself. Hugs LD
Being patient is the hardest thing to do! I am 73 years old down here in Texas. Had my right hip replacement. March 29, you can see it has been right at the end of 7 weeks. I'm still on a walker part time and cane part time, still resting and icing when it hurts. It does till hurt when I walk to much on the cane. I still do all the exercises but even over do that every now and then. Afterwards needing rest and ice. The 6 weeks surgeon visit was good but he said I had several muscles and tendons that were really tight. So next week back to some more physical therapy for 3 more weeks. This is a much slower process than I thought it would be. But at least all the pain is now different and not as bad as the horrible bone on bone pain I had before that had me totoally bedridden! I am sleeping great!
so have patient with your self, this is a really, really big surgery! You will heal. Ice is your friend and so are pain pills.
Hi Angela you're still in the early days. My leg went numb also and had pins and needles , bit scared but does go! I'm 7 wks now and have been told to keep using 2 crutches due to my hip still being too weak. Like others have said it is frustrating but we,ll get there eventually x
Gloria!! Where are from Texas are you from I'm also from Texas deep in the heart of Texas San Antonio to be exact!! I know all about being patient is the hardest thing!!! I'm still struggling with my hip still. my first surgery was in July I dislocated it and had to have a total hip revision. 6 weeks nonweightbearing. it has been a very slow recovery for me. now I'm suffering from all this nerve pain and sensitivity. It's is driving me up the wall!! sometimes I don't even want to get out of bed!! I'm so depressed but I have to keep going because I have my family counting on me. getting grandkids to school, being here for them after school. But it's tough!
I don't often get pain only achy now and then. I am so surprised at how slow the healing is but I am impatient as I want to start living again as like you I was bed ridden for a while . Thank you for the advice I wish you all the healing thoughts I can send 👌
Rockport, today is the Babes on the bay fishing tournament. I have two daughters and a granddaughter and one other lady. The team named Lady Fish. Talking about depressed. I can't go and watch them weigh in like usually. Too much pain today. But maybe next year. I've been saying that for a couple years!
