6 weeks post hip replacement and swimming

Hi all

Well I had my 6 week check up with my consultant yesterday and I asked him when I was able to go swimming telling him I can only swim breast stroke ...to my surprise he said I could swim now...and I have just come back from the pool..ok so I'm not very fast but I swam 40 lengths...my lower back was a little sore while doing it but I enjoyed it so much !! I wanted to put this on here to inspire others as some people have commented that either you will not be able to breast swim any more ..period.....or perhaps not for 3 months...ladies and gentlemen my hip does not hurt and I feel great....hoping you all are doing well

Great to hear that you are having a good recovery. I go next week to see my consultant. I have no pain now still after sitting for a while I find it on my thigh after a few steps it's fine

Well done that’s  amazing I am going for my pre op next week hoping for a date for my second hip replacement.

So happy for you .congrats

That's fantastic news.  Hope that your speedy recovery continues.   So glad to be on this forum as the info we are given from different specialists/hospitals varies so much.

Jane , I find it important to talk about the good stuff as most people are concerned or in pain and talk about negative things...I have knee replacement last September on same side as hip and must say the hip replacement was so much easier..I'm not walking with a waddle now or have that horrendous groin pain..don't get me wrong there is recovery to get through and restrictions were a challenge....I'm so glad I had this operation and am so grateful that I have private healthcare with my job

Inspiring, well done.

Can I ask how you managed to get in and out of the pool?  I'm still awaiting op, but currently do not have enough movement in my hip to climb up a ladder to get out.  I'm terrified of getting in and not being able to get out again!

Awesome. Way to go. I am a swimming instructor and have had 2 hips done. Keep up the good work. One caution that some folk don't realise...don't breaststroke with flippers on.

Also the water is a great place to do yr exercises.

Good work pennypops. 👍

Great news! I love swimming, and like you, I only swim breaststroke. I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to swim breaststroke any more, but surgeon was fine about it. Great exercise! Wishing you all the best with your recovery.

That’s brilliant! Can I ask - was yourTHR posterior or anterior? My physio has said 3 months... like you I can only do breast stroke.  I’m away at the moment and am going to try and get in the pool this afternoon in my compression socks, to try and walk about and cool down.

Hi, it was posterior approach..and my physio said it's normally 12 weeks however my surgeon was quite clear that I could start straight away...no after effects today ..

Hi,

My local leisure centre's pool has steps going into the pool as well as ladders

My leisure centre has two pools, the outside one has ladders which I have dared not try but the indoor one has steps and a rail to hang onto. I did go round the local area looking for a pool with decent access, it was quite difficult to find one. I must admit when I am in the pool I sometimes think what happens if I can’t get out!!
