amitriptyline and weight gain

Has anyone found a better solution to migraine than amitriptyline? 2 months on 40mg increasing to 70mg. Already overweight! I have read about a lot of people being unable to control their weigh on these, am worried about continuing. Had propranalol in the past but didn't help the migraine. Also have Tinnitus, which I think is worse on amitriptyline...

Tinnitus is a side effect of taking it had it before amitriptyline makes it worse

My weight has gone up on this drug being in pain makes things worse told me Gp about this I'm on 40 mg which works well for me getting a good night sleep

Sure others here take it for migraine some people have lost weight other weight gain we are all different

Lasted 4 days on Amitriptyline as a pain killer. I could not function on it and got dizzi spells. go back to the Doctor and ask for something else.

It takes 4-6 weeks for full effect the trouble is people just bin it and say they can't cope with it as a painkiller for pain it's very good

Were you on a high dose? I will see my GP about it though. Not sure what to do...

I've been on it about 6 weeks now. They do seem to help the migraines, but so many people say they've put a lot of weight on... and I've a stone to lose already. Guess I will have to discuss with the GP.

Found it too be really good for my long term pain 2014 nov my illness has got worse and only this drug has worked the weight gain is one thing that's ive found I do get about manic with this drug on top of tramadol

Have a chat with your Gp say about the weight gain

No only 25mg a day. To build up to 100mg, bu like I said 4 days was enough

My daughter was a very bad migraines sufferer..alway in hospital with it...the last time she was there which was years ago now, she was in a dark room and this specialist said you can have this new medication but it will do nothing for you if it isn't migraine..within a hour she walked out..they gave her a few to take with her.fir another time.,this was a new med at the time it wasn't readily available..but as soon as it was her doctor gave her a script for them ,nit cheap, but very effective...,they were like a miracle drug...she now may only get a migraine once a year or every two years..it's called something like this:  IMMIGREN. IMEGREN IMEGRIN.?? Can't remember the spelling..maybe try googling it...really hope you get something very soon victoria..we used to hate watching our daughter suffer soo much..from the age of 4 banging her head on the wall in bed with horrific pain...of course she was checked by a Paediatrician  Neuro.Nothing  worked.....horrible memories...must have been just terrible for her..she got this med when she was 17 now is 36 so twas a long time ago...Gid bless you..hooe you get a pain free day...:-) Australia

Thankyou Christine. I think I've heard of the tablets you mention and I will certainly be looking it up! I'm glad your daughter found a solution, I never suffered as a child, but had migraine with aura in my late teens and twenties. These are different, and include dizziness and tinnitus, so I didn't recognise it as migraine. The headaches are usually mild but constant, though I had a major one in December which saw me hospitalised. Your daughter must have suffered terribly if they were as bad as that all the time. Pleased she is now better. Thanks for your reply.

I don't know if this is of any help but I've been on topiramate. I have to admit I had awful side effects but as everyone knows everybody is different when it comes to things like that. I was on amitriptaline for almost 6months and found no connection with weight gain so just goes to show

That's good to hear Lauren.. I guess I will have to be careful and see what happens.

Hope things work well for you and you don't suffer much longer

Thankyou confused

I was on amitriptylin for 8 months. Loads of side effects but ref weight gain...put on two stone in two months and my diet had not changed at all and overall put on 3 stone in the 8 months. i don't get migraines, was taking them for neuropathic pain, but to be honest they did not help in that department more than the meds I was already on and the weight gain let alone all the other side effects were not worth it..aside from the weight gain sent me in downward spiral for those months. Been off them now for nearly 2 months and only weight lost was really ill (untelated matter) and not a lot of weight loss but I am paralysed so if at all possible it will be extra difficult for me to loose the weight. Wish I had never seen these drugs. Did tell the doc wanted off several times but was told to stick with it. I have since read lots of cases on here of people suffering significant weight gain on here on amitriptylin..and most struggling to loose after. Hope you find an alternative that works for you.

Wow Victoria that's very substantial weight gain..have been on them for 16 yrs now ..never had a weight problem from them...just goes to show how different the side effects are for different people, many on this forum have the same problem.....infact many varying side effects too..do hope you get sorted soon.have a lovely day..God bless..:-) xx

That's awful. What's in these pills to have such an effect? I'ts crazy! I've just picked up my next lot of amitriptyline as had a crap weekend with migraine... I'm definitely going to monitor my weight, coz if I speak to the doc now I doubt they will listen.

One word chocolate since taking amitriptyline hooked on chocolate can't get enough of the stuff lol before it was no and again but now since last May it's gone mad

Funny you should say that! Me too! Haven't bothered with chocolate for years, last few weeks that's definitely changed...

Shame it's not carrots I fancy instead. That would be better!!
