First timer

Hi

I'm a new hippie having just had a total right hip replacement and am now day 6 of recovery. I got home on Saturday (day4) and so far all is good, maybe too good! I have had someone running after me all weekend but he needs to go to work so I'll be left on my own for a good part of the day.

Do you think it's better to have my days planned out or just see what happens?

I've not to go back to physio for 3 weeks so I think they are expecting me to get on with it. The problem is when I'm doing my exercises all the focus is on the operated leg is this right? I tried to take my weight on it to lift my left leg and realised it wasn't as strong so gave up. Should I be trying to build up the weight on the non operated one or not bother? I need to get this replaced at some point probably same time next year if possible. Anyway I look forward to being part of the group and hearing other people's progress to see if I'm recovering at similar speed

Hi Susan.

It's still early days for you so don't try and do to much especially if your at home on your own! I got tired easily for the first 3-4 weeks rest is important,do the physio excersizes they have given you for me it was all standing on non operated leg.

The first two weeks or so are the hardest then it gets progressively easier. I'm 13 weeks post RTHR and pleased to say walking well and pain free 😃

Good luck with your recovery.

Graham.

Hi Susan.

Your in the very early stages of recovery. I was reading in here people going on long road trips after a couple of days. Eh NO !

I would be saying listen to your body and rest as much as it is telling you. You have had major surgery and brutal surgery. Sleeping can be a nightmare. I remember day 10 I was posting on here I hate nights !

The most important advice I will give you is do your physio exercises if you do little else. The first two weeks are often the worst and after that gradual improvements.

You will get yourgood days and your not so good. I am now halfway through week 4. I can walk in the house without a lot of support. Outside. First day. I am taking my two sticks. I still work and have terrible cabin fever. Let me out of here 😃

We all recover at different speeds. It is a personal journey. Good luck with your recovery and come back anytime. We love to hear how our fellow hippies are doing. Even somewhere to have a good winger on a bad day. We are all here to help and encourage.

Thanks Graham I'm pulling in favours from everyone, friends keep asking when they can visit and I just tell them anytime but be prepared to help me even if it's sticking a washing on or putting my Ted's on 😊

Thanks Sandra I said to my boss I would answer emails but so far the lap top is still in the cupboard. Maybe in a couple of weeks I'll take a peek but just taking the time to relax. I've been sleeping quite well so pleased the hip pain has gone so quickly 😊

Haha. That's the spirit get people to run around after you! The worst thing for me was not being able to get into bed without help, if I had to get out in the night I was ok doing that but would have to wake my wife to get me back in! She was very happy when I got to the stage where I could do it myself.

Keep up the good work, it's worth it in the end.

😃

hi susan,

warm welcome to this wonderful hippies forum where we share our personal stories and exeriences ...

you are so cute !!!!! what did you expect ?  wonderful that you are doing so well -

amazing right, how that awful pain is gone ....

I live alone and had 2 THR surgeries - a home nurse would come in every morning to wash and dress me and check my scar - then I was by myself most of the day(s) - did my exercises (the ones I was shown in hospital ) - no real plan -

when I was up to it, I made an omelette or something simple to cook (in 2nd week post-op) - I had a rollator instead of crutches though ...

you will be fine - listen to your body, rest a lot - I am sure you will find the rythm ...

and of course, you can always come here to share what is going on with you, maybe response to newbies (cool) -

big warm hug

renee

Welcome!

Plan little things for each day.

Today I will do all my exercises twice. You may not get through them all at once, but slowly, taking breaks. I will wash my hair today. I will make a simple meal today.Today I will walk 3 doors down the street. Tomorrow will be 4.

Your goals may be small, but having a feeling of accomplishment is important. You will feel bored, useless and frustrated. You may suddenly feel exhausted and go rest. It's important to listen to your body but also challenge it a little to make progress.

You are right about exercising both legs. Keep them both moving and strengthening. It never hurts to work out that other leg.

Good luck!

wow you're doing well - I'm 5 weeks post op - just now getting some energy back, I had a therapist come to the house the first three weeks thee times a week it's important to learn the correct positions!!!

Hi Susan,

Glad it's all going well. Your exercises should be for your operated leg. Stand on your good leg. Take it steadily. I had a total right hip op, same as you, and my recovery was great. (13 weeks ago now.) I planned some days, with visitors, and after day 7, went out on my crutches to meet people. Then other days I just relaxed, sat outside and read, and did my exercises. ( It was July then, so warm.) Glad you are sleeping well, I found the nights were pretty rubbish! Wishing you a good recovery.

I feel I'm maybe doing too much too quickly and lulling myself into a false sense of security! Since coming home on Saturday I've had a shower each morning and so far managed fine. Having a walk in shower helps. My partner has moved in with me to look after me so I'm on his healthy diet, just smaller portions than his. I've got pt organised for 3 weeks time so will see how many sessions I'll need after that. It's the tiredness I'm not used to. I'm normally a poor sleeper but at the moment can nod off at the drop of a hat! I guess that's the body's instruction to slow down. Well I better just do that 😊

this is a great forum - I am learning to take each day at a time; the walks without pain I give thanks constantly it was grueling: if I'm tired I rest; telling myself it's ok to just be; being kind to myself: thank you all for input it is most encouraging and blessings to all

I am really happy for you and thank you for sharing. ...it is very encouraging, darling ..

did you have anterior or posterior approach?

Hi Susan

I am ten days in and hubby goes back to work weds . I can get out bed and up/ down stairs once a day tho up is so much harder than down but a week ago I could do neither without agony ! Hubby worried about going back but my daughter will be back and for from Uni too so not worried . As long as I can wash and get to loo / kettle I will be ok . Certainly not doing more than reading and watching tv tho. Doing physio on bad leg but not pushing it as every day brings new pains . Codeine helps but think I lost last week in a drug induced haze because the pain was awful . Some lovely people on here encouraged me to stick at it and each day is better X

stay w it - slow snd steady wins the race so I'm told - I am going into my 6 week post op and still find I am very tired - I was a go getter and now it seems if I do two things a day -i.e. grocery or laundry I've had it -hope to gain more oomph as I go slong

Yes I agree at least if I achieve a couple of things per day I'll be happy. My partner has a early morning start tomorrow so my sister is going to come over and help me up. The most problematic is the Teds and making sure I get them on.

So far I've had visitors every day since being home which is good as it's a long day on my own. I'm sure this stop though as they get fed up running after me lol

😁

At 7 weeks I need to get on a plane to London so have already prepared booked assistance just in case. Hopefully I'll be walking a bit further and confident by then.

I'm planning on doing it slow but steady so hopefully no relapses!

I'm glad I found this site so I can measure myself against others at the same or different stages 😊

ah good luck!! let us know how you make out and remember to just take it slowly- therapist told me tissues are healing at 12 weeks so be kind to yourself!!!

Wow your good visitors ever y day ! I could not face anyone the first week was in too much pain !

I'm now on day 7 but had a terrible night with stomach pain. I think it's the constipation from all the drugs and so I've been taking more lactolase than prescribed as it didn't seem to work! I'm pleased to say that I finally got the movement I was waiting on after probably my 8th trip to the toilet last night! I hope this is just temporary as normally my bowels are pretty regular. I've been eating healthy but I can't cope with emptying g just once a week eek!
