Getting into a car after hip replacement

Hello how long after the operation can one get into the car as a passenger?

like theres any time limit about that?

No time limit but be cautious when you get in and follow the instructions and advice given by occupational therapist

the dr told me that he dont recomend to get into a car for a month,, i think this is wierd, no?

as i spoke with other doctors and they told me that theres no restriction regarding that just driving

I had to get into the car after three days in oprder to be driven home. You just need to do it with great care and follow any advice from the ot

There isn't a time limit cause Yu get in a car to come home from hospital but best thing is tip seat back a bit put either pillow or cushion on seat to be bit more comfortable just don't make unnecessary trips cause it does hurt to get in and out of a car

oh ok thanks

i imagine that,

i think they only want to take real precaution for my hip just in case

I've got a cushion and a slippy plastic bag (it's actually a plastic nurses apron from the hospital) laid over the pillow which allows you to swing your legs in together after backing onto the seat.

Ye that's wat I did.i just never made unnecessary trips cause it was always uncomfortable

Hi, was told ok to get in car, just follow guidelines given. Had to get in car following discharge and at that stage was not sure of my body's capabilities. So sure it will be easier now. I was given a slide sheet from hospital which makes it easier to swivel. Venturing out on Friday so will see how it has improved. Take care x

Hi

I got into my husbands car to go home.No problems if you follow the instructions.

Like others have said....tip the seat back, push it back as well. Even a plastic shopping bag on the seat helps you to swivel around and into the car.

That was it for about a week then I was going crazy sitting in the house so he took me out {not far} for coffee most days.....made me feel more human

No trying to drive for six weeks mind!!!!

well i am going to the  house in an ambulance cause the dr said he dont recomend to be in the car for a month

that i find silly cause i know everyone is getting in their car fast,

If your doctor is sending you home in an ambulance then I'm sure there must be a good reason for it. Don't forget on here there are all different types of thr procedures done and that can have a bearing on what your told. I have queried things I've seen on here but told the reason I must not do them so although this site is brilliant, I think you should first of all stick by the advice of your surgeon who knows your particular case best.

he only told me that as i am young he  doesnt want to take any risk

Hi moi I personally feel the same way, I think its worth taking extra precautions at this stage for a few weeks rather than cause any complications which could last month's later on to put right.

yeah but  the same operation was giving to my uncle in panama different dr, same approach , and they told him go right away to do everithig you can walk

they also telling me thta 90 degree rule is not really ar rule more a precaution

I would think it depends on the car. I have an SUV so I was driving three weeks post op but still put a rolled up towel at the back of the seat. Now 4 mo post op and the thought of getting into a regular car makes me turn in the other direction. Good advise below on the other posts about getting into the car properly.

Hi

two days post op to be driven home.Follow advice-make sure the seat is tilted right back so you have plenty of room to move in and out slowly.Gently does it.

Hi I went home in my daughters car one day after THR. You have to sit on the seat sideways and swing round into the car. Obviously taking your time. It is quite difficult at first. I still get in my own car the same way 15 months later.

well the first time i will get into a car is after about 3 weeks that i will begin to i hope go to work,, but before that i will not enter a car

also i actually enter the car right now swinging the legs as much easyr forme

Well good question. But how else can we get back home to our other half & lovely pets? You can get a special cushion to help with this. A web site is ask sid. Regards amandah
