Hi, I'm 2 weeks 4 days Post-op RTHR

I know everyone heals different, but after 18 days I still have to use my walker. Can't wait until I transfer to a cane. I have home therapy 3 times a week. Also doing bed exercises twice a day and chair exercises every hour including walking around. This morning I got a new pain in my groin. Has anyone experienced this?

Oh Alice,

This is a long and tiring recovery, much longer than ew were led to believe, and certainly longer than we think it should be.

Take your time, it will get better, but progress seems so slow at the beginning.

We all recover differently at different rates, so don't be put off if someone else can do something that you cannot yet.

Pain in the groin is not uncommon, but not something I experienced .... I had other problems though when my ceramic 'socket' was found to be incorrectly inserted cry.  I had a second operation to correct it - which failed.  I will have to have another much bigger operation to cut it away from my pelvis and correct it sometime in the future.

It takes longer than 18 days, just take every day as it comes , you will get there give it time as Graham says everyone is different you are doing more than I could after 18 days it's a big operation perhaps your groin aches because you are doing to much to soon.

take care.

That happened to me to in the beginning and it's just from doing the exercises and your muscles getting used to it. Now I've been getting an ache in my quad and my first reaction is "uh oh" I hope I didn't do something to my implant and then my voice of reason kicks in and I know that I'm these are the sensations that come with healing.

Hi Alice,

iI am 8 days in. I use the Zimmer frame only at night when I go to the loo. I am using one stick inside and two sticks outside.

I have managed two short walks today. I have no groin pain but I did have an alarming and painful clicking sensation in my hip. I lay still and hoped it was ok.  I am still able to move but it was a bit worrying.

Sitting is not great even with my feet raised on a stool, reclining is definitely the best position for me.

Good luck! The overall message seems to be that everyone progresses at different rates and to some extent it must depend on how you were before your op.

Marion

Thanks Rocketman, sorry about all of your problems. I just hope they correct it so you can get better soon.

Thanks Lorna, I am so glad to have found this forum and all the wonderful folks on it. As we are all in this "Hippie" thing together.

I will ask the therapist about it Monday when she come.

Hugs,

Alice

I know the first thing we think about is "did we do somrthing wrong?"

But I think it's muscles that are getting a new workout...LOL

Hi Marion,

I'm 10 days ahead of you. We will get through this at our own rate. But the hard part is over and we will see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Hugs,

Alice

Hi Alice!! I'm 19 days out today. I have not had groin pain. But l am unable to put full weight on my leg. I am using a walker and I've got a death grip using it! I started to get a blister one my left hand as well as my shoulder is starting to hurt! 😩 I'm trying to step more on that leg but it hurts. Not very bad but none the less hurts. I've been very disappointed about this but these wonderful hippies are giving me advice and a reminder we are all different we heal at different levels and time. I'm trying to stay positive but it's hard. I just got to take this one day at a time. I'm wishing you the best and it will get better!! Hugs! πŸ€—πŸ€—

Hi Linda,

I had mine on July 19, so we are real close with this surgery. We will get through this. We will move to the cane when we are ready. Take it easy and before you know it, we will be out shopping and moving about with these new HIPS....

Hugs,

Alice

Patience , but Excerise ! I am 5 weeks still using cane , not long as I am walking too on my own .

Thank you Alice!! Keep posting you progress!! I can't wait to be able to get out into the world! πŸ€“

Hi Alice,

I'm 14wks p.o. tomorrow, it is only this last wk my groin pain has eased. It's still there but not as bad. My physio said it's all muscles pulling bk together again. In my case I have not used these muscles for wks properly. I have only stopped using one crutch a few wks ago and I still have a limp, so, probably still not using all muscles properly. As others say, it'll take as long as it takes.

Hi Brenda,

I was wondering about this groin pain, since I just got it. I wanted to be sure it was from the muscles that started to work and not from me doing something wrong.

I don't mind how long it takes to get back to normal as it was over a year walking in pain so bad I would cry.

Hugs,

Alice

Most ppl on here are pleased they had the op because it's less pain than before the op. There was nothing wrong with me. I had a fall broke my hip had to have THR. So I've gone from rushing around, working, swimming, looking after the family. Now I'm doing everything in slow motion. My 82 yr old mum walks quicker than me now πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚it's a big shock to my system. We'll get bk to normal soon xx

Hi Alice,  Rocketman told you the truth when he said it is a long recovery.  I ended up having a 10 day stay in the hospital, and then had 6 weeks of visits from therapists, and a nurse.  At the 9th week, i changed from my walker to a cane.  I try to walk without here at the house, but do a lot of hobbling.  I don't recall a groin pain, but i have lots of pain in my leg, which i am sure is my muscles healing.  Just hang in there do your exercises, this too shall passl

Ty for your response to my msg.

Hi Connie, I know something about "long recoveries" as I had 2 knee replacement & one knee revision done back in 1999, 2002 & 2003.

So it's OK going slow motion, I know I will get there...I stayed in hospital 9 days. They wanted to make sure I was able to walk cause I'm a care giver for my husband who has tramatic brain injury from a vehicle accident. They knew I would have little help when I got home.

I am set up to have 4 weeks of home therapy, thats through August.

I have exercises I do in my chair every hour and then I walk around the house then also.

Hugs,

Alice

I think physical therapy is good, but keep in mind that before they wake you, they rotate your leg into various positions to make sure the hip won't pop out. If you're not in perfect physical shape, the muscles can be somehow injured. That's what happened to me--once my pain meds wore off, my left hip (I got both done at the same time) was great--post surgery of course, but basically good. But my right side hurt, and no one could tell me why (I suspect the doctor had an idea, but I don't think they want to say anything for liability purposes). I had the home physical therapy, and afterward it really hurt. But once I gave it a chance to heal (I'm done with the home version and haven't started the out-patient) it's really better! I can run around (not really run yet, but walk a lot without anything, and normally!) without medication--but I tried the physical therapy again, and it hurts again, but less (I didn't push myself much, I'm further along). So I don't know--I can do everything almost I did pre-surgery, but I'm stiff when I stand.

I'd consider letting your physical therapist know and taking it easy.

Thanks, I will tell my PT on Monday, as I have home PT 3 times a week through the entire month.
