Confused

Post op 3 weeks today RTHR.  When walking with a walker(zimmer frame) I have severe pain under the front of the knee and on the outer side of the knee of the operated hip. When walking with a cane I have groin pain and no knee pain. I may have psoas tendonitis but the groin pain is much less and at times non-existent when using the walker. Either way it is difficult to walk.  Has anyone else had this experience? Thanks.

Jeanne

Sorry can't help, on this other than a little surprised that you are using a frame at 3 weeks post op and a cane, I only had the frame for about 3-4 days and was encouraged to come of of it ASAP however I was on two crutches for the first 2-3 weeks then down to one crutch not sure I could have supported myself on a cane at 3 weeks so maybe that's the problem

Sorry, I haven't experienced this either, I was discharged home with crutches and still on crutches almost 3 weeks in recovery.  Did you have issues with knee pain prior to the op?

If it was me, I would probably give either the physio or my doctor a ring to see what their advice is.

good luck

Hi Sally, please don't get upset about your pains and what you are using, everybody is different,I had all sorts of problems, swelling, backache, groin pain, then 2/3 days later it was different, some pain killers sent me crazy and claustrophobic,so you must do and change things what is right for YOU.we all think why am I different but that's how it is,keep going and do what's right for you God Bless Michael

Sorry Sally I wasnt saying that you using a frame was wrong I am sure your physio and/ consultant believes that is right for you, we are all different and don't know or even understand other factors they they have to take into account when treating us , I just know I would have been unable to managed with just a cane at 3 weeks. I used both crutches outside till about week 5 only one inside to about week 4 and outside to about week 6 I then used a stick for a couple of weeks on and off but as you can see from the forum no two people are the same

You can get knee pain if the surgeon strained it when dislocating the leg during the operation. I had it for quite a long time but it did eventually go.

Dear Sally -

Sounds that your muscles are working hard to stabilize your body when walking ..

I was advised to get a trolley/walker as I live alone - so no crutches for me - I had to learn how to walk again after a long time of wobbling -

posture straight, not rigid, heel to toe and complete step .. see, I can write it but don;t do it - I am a sloppy walker and my knees, shin and groin (sometimes simultaneously) will let me know ...

It is not helping that after RTHR my Left hip needs one now too - so, yeah - still crooked and unbalanced -

take one step at a time, take your time with it and go at your own pace -

be gentle with your self -

warm hug

Thanks Cate.  My power went out so couldn't respond to anyone until now.  I did have similar knee pain pre-op and was told it was referred pain from the hip OA.

I have made an appointment with the doctor for this week.  Actually since I complained to all of  you the groin pain has improved significantly.  Maybe it was the complaining or just making the appointment with the doc-seems to often work to improve symptoms! Still can't sit without groin pain so will keep the appointment.

Jeanne

Hi Dian,

I didn't think you were judging me about the frame. KNow you wer being helpful. No need to apologize really.   I know that each doctor has their own idea of the right way to do this and we sheep follow what they say.  What else can we do?  Happy to report the groin pain is much less yesterday and today. Happily have an appointment with the surgeon this week to find out more about this pain.  Although better when walking, still can't sit in a proper chair only the lift chair and can't do the exercises without pain in groin.  Hopefully he will shed some light on why this is so.

Thanks for your input.

Jeanne

Thanks Annedi

Glad to hear that eventually the knee pain will go.  It only hurts when walking with the frame so I am hopeful it will get better.

Jeanne

Thank you so much dear Renee  I think you are right My body is so out of kilter that it has to work very hard to stabilize.

I too don't remember how to walk and have to conciously say heel, toe etc.I too have OA in left hip.  Wanting to avoid another replacment if possible but  I know putting so much pressure on it now is only making it worse.  Did have a friend say that she was told she needed both hips replaced but after one surgery and a full recovery she has had less trouble with the other hip and doesn't feel she needs the surgery.

Here's hoping for both alll of us.

Thanks for the reminder to be gentle with myself and you kind words.  I often expect too much too fast. Am working on it.

hugs,

Jeanne

Hi Sally, At my 6 month check I told my consultant about my knee pain and weakness in said knee, he smiled and nodded sympathetically and Said such things do often happen in this type of surgery. He said keep the faithsmile keep exercising, treat yourself right and you will recover, and I did. He said was just how it is when you skeletal form is altered from pre to post op, and the muscle wastage during the operation is instant and devastating, but can be regained. He said pain in knees, back and ankles just treat symptomatically...ie take a painkiller and work the area to strengthen it.
