Hi Ian,
There are people who have had sucess and people who haven't. I am waiting for my op too - just under 4 weeks away. I can't say - as it hasn't happened yet!
Hi thanks for replying so your in the same boat it's a hard decision, good luck I hope everything goes well with you.
Ian
Find a good surgeon.
Thanks - you too! I take it with having your pre-op your operation is not long away either! Are you in for day surgery or do you get to stay a night? It's day surgery here for me. I am guessing you have thought of all the alternatives too - fact of it is my stomach isn't sealing at all - and the tablets you have to take are just horrible. I decided to have the op. I'm scared about it in someways - but I know it's a field my surgeon has been working in for a lot of years, so I trust him! Good luck!
Not all the tests were done yet. I still have to do the CT scan and the upper GI endoscopy. When all test results are available and we discussed the post-op requirements then we will weigh the pros and cons and make a decision as to go or not. If we go, the surgery schedule will be checked and all the details will be looked at. This is a big surgery. Improvement in the Quality Of Life is not a critical factor.
The risks will have to be looked at under the microscope. It won't be over until it is done. I need to be extra careful because I am 81 and aleady had a CABGx3 (triple bypass) 2 years ago.
So, you be careful, hear?
Hi Ian, it is a major thing that your body will go through... the only thing that will determine whether the operation will be succesful is proper care. Following the doctor's instructions and dietary regulations, taking it easy and not picking up any heavy things. Also, smoking and coffee (anything that would normally aggravate your hernia and the resulting symptoms) should be avoided. You will be fine as long as you take care of yourself. Good luck with the pre-op and the operation itself!!
Thank you Bianchi for the great advice, have you had the operation?
Ian
I've been told I will be in hospital a couple of nights not been given a date for the op but must be soon am sure I will find out more tomorrow.
Ian
Hi Ian,
You may not find out your date tomorrow - I was told I wouldn't get a date until the pre-op was completed. I waited for a week after (when the results for MRSA test would be in) and called the surgeons secretary to get a date. Even then it was a date 7 weeks after the pre-op!
Hi Ian, no I haven't but I have a feeling that it is coming. I have a 2 cm hiatus hernia with all the symptoms - permanent sore throat, difficulty swallowing, painful hiccups, acid reflux, heartburn and in addition to all that, the hernia is causing the muscles that holds my stomach in place underneath my ribs to weaken, resulting in permanent pain. I have an appointment with a leading gastroenterologist only in August so until then, I can only take care of myself as best as I can and keep lots of antacids at hand. Good look with your pre-op!!!! Hope it goes well!!
Hi, I have an hiatus hernia and have had it for years. I also got a dismotility problem which makes it worse. Could you tell me what symptoms you are having and why they are doing the operation? Is your hernia small or large?
Hi I have a 2cm hh along with constant indigestion stomach pains I can't sleep on my right side sometimes wake up chocking I to have a cough I'm on the maximum does of omerprazole and ranitidine my doctor said there is know more options tablet wise Iim so worried about the operation and even though my pre-op is today I keep having doubts.
Hi, I don't know the size of my hernia but I get dreadful symptoms. I have severe chest pain but no acid coming up but get a lot of burping when it is playing up. I am on Lansoprazole 30mg so this stops the acid. If I was offered the op I would take it to get rid of the pain which feels like a heart attack. It will be worth it if you can eat normal again.
Good luck whatever you decide.
Thank you Merryl my pre-op is now done I suppose I'm a bit of a wimp panicking!!
I hope you can get your heath sorted.
Ian
You are not a wimp but having any operation is scarey. When are you having the actual op?
They haven't given me a date just told me it will be soon wish I knew even just to give work some notice
Hi Ian,
If you know the surgeon - ring the hospital and ask to speak to their secretary - I'd leave it about a week - and ask if they have a date for you - that's how I got my date. Mine was within 8 weeks of my pre-op.
Thank you for your advice will do that in a week, hope your op goes well keep intouch and let me know how it goes.
Ian
Hi Ian -
I'll keep you posted! Are you having a full 360 nissen or a partial wrap? I'm having a 270 degree fundoplication - surgeon says it causes a lot less problems and means I should get relief from reflux but still be able to be sick and belch (woo hoo! - go vomit!) also should hopefully mean I won't have the swallowing issues people get with a full nissen. I would say I have had chats with people who have had the full wrap with no problems what so ever. I think it really depends on the skills of your surgeon.
Let me know when you get your date!
