I have an aching in my right buttock and right thigh. Is feel like a bad toothache. I’m 4 weeks post op right total hip replacement. I’m walking with a cane but still limp due to my right leg is notably longer than my left leg. Just wondering if this aching is to be expected. I had the traditional posterior approach used so I know my muscle has been cut. Thank you!
Jackie, did you have this discrepancy before your THR R? I'm 6 weeks post-op, linear approach, with a similar situation. I *think* I was 2mm longer when measured years ago...
I'm 10 weeks out now and still having thigh and buttock pain...not every day but enough. Therapist said it could be that way for several months due to lengthy healing. It gets to me some days but feeling better every day.
Hang in there and take it easy...patience is key. (I lack patience, so there's that lol).
No I did not have this aching before surgery. Evidently my right leg was 1/2” longer before surgery (I never knew that until surgeon told my husband) and with new hip.... my right leg is now 1” longer. I have to get an orthotic for left shoe.
Thank you Tamara. I’m inpatient too. Lol
I am also 4 week post op LTHR posterior approach and have exactly the same problem as you, it's not a sharp pain but more of a heavy nagging ache in left buttock and thigh doesn't stop me walking but more of an annoyance.
I suppose we have to expect aching as everything is repairing inside. Bones have been cut and drilled, muscles cut and stretched hopefully it does not hurt as bad as before your op. My surgeon said he tries to level the legs but sometimes you may need to have one shoe built up. My one leg became shorter than the other due to the arthritis and I walked like a penguin. I the surgeon seems to have given me length as I can stand on two feet for the first time in years. I hope you can resolve this problem as you recover.
Hi Jackie, l also had Hip replacement 4 weeks ago, but l had anterior surgery from the front.
I also have the achy feeling in my butt and around the scar area, I'm using heat ( a hot water bottle), and that is helping.
I watched a You Tube video on the hip surgery, and I'm not surprised were all in pain, it's a very aggressive surgery, but time will heal all wounds, and don't forget to do your physical therapy every day, that has helped me so much, I'm walking on my own without walker or cane.
Hope you feel better soon.
Hi Jackie I am nearly ten weeks post op. I often get this feeling in my buttocks on the operated side and the pain down the side of the leg, but only when I have been walking for too long. I noticed that when I stand up and do something I am holding the buttock and hip muscles really tight. When I realise this I relax the muscles quickly and now I am more aware of it as I stand now. I had one day when my right buttock muscles were so tense and painful and I googled an exercise which said to lay/sit down and tense the buttock muscles for a count of ten, then release them. I did this ten times and released the muscle. It may work for you and it's worth a try. Good luck Jackie.
Thank you!!
Thank you!!
Thank you!
Thank you!!
Massage therapy. Either by a professional or get one of the roller types and do it yourself. This has done wonders for me. It breaks up the tight muscles and restores blood flow. I'm 5 weeks anterior and am walking without a cane. I still get the buttocks pain but, massaging does wonders for it. Of course, check with your doctor before trying. Good luck...
