I'm 57 and my problems started in Jan, cutting a long story short I've had blod tests all fine, stool samples all fine, ultrasound fine, now have to have a colonoscopy which is scaring me! I don't have loose bowels although maybe softer the next time I might be slightly constipated, my main problem is lower abdominal cramps! Normaly before I need the toilet..any help would be appretiated
You are doing ok with all the tests to date! It's good that you're having a colonoscopy next. If you're worried about the actual procedure, many people (including me) find it just routine with little discomfort. You might be nervous about the results, which is perfectly normal. So, best wishes and keep us informed. You will get lots of support from this site!
Thank you for replying John very much appretiated I know everyone's symptoms differ but would you tell me what your initial symptoms were.
Nothing like yours. I became bloated, had a very uncomfortable and painful feeling in my upper right bowel, was told there was an infection and was treated for that for two weeks but the infection remained. Chills and a complete loss of appetite and very tired all the time. I couldn't pass anything eventually (bowel movements) and was sent to A and E. As you have probably gathered, it resulted in surgery to remove a tumour from the bowel. So as I said, nothing like you have! I really just wanted to reassure you about the colonoscopy. Other people will probably be more help about your symptoms. I'm pleased you are getting it sorted. Please don't worry and don't look things up on the Internet. I did that, still do and it doesn't help at all. For me, it made my fears worse.
My reply was not posted because of an error. So, here's another brief attempt. Basically, my symptoms were quite different from yours. I really just wanted to reassure you about the colonoscopy. I'm sure you'll get advice and support from others with symptoms similar to yours. Going to bed now, but I'll check the site in the morning. Don't worry!
And now I can see my first reply! Oh well, never mind...🙂
I agree with John, for most people colonoscopy tests are not really very much of a problem. You will normally be offered the choice of sedation or gas, I chose gas on the two tests that I have taken but didn't really need it. Everyone is different, though, so discuss the matter before the test. It is usual to have a session with a nurse a few days before the test and this is the best time to talk over the options available. The least pleasant part of the procedure, as far as I was concerned, was the need for a particularly aggressive laxative the evening before the test!
I hope all goes well on the test.
