Is there anyone else who has mostly knee pain referred from hip OA instead of hip pain?

Hi, since last Fall I have been having sharp pain in my knee area. I've had xrays & MRIs of my knee, my back & my hip. My knee checked out fine. I do have some OA in my back, & moderate to severe OA in my hip. 2 surgeons later & a psysiatrist ( along with 2 steroid shots in my hip ( the last one worsened my knee pain) confirmed to them that I needed a THR.. which is now scheduled for mid Sept. My big fear is that although I probably need a new left hip.. is that the pain is actually being referred from my back somehow. I asked the Drs. & my surgeon said most people have hip & groin pain, but that I was one of the few where the was hip problem referred the pain to about 6 " above my knee, in my knee & sometimes below my knee. I guess I'm just looking to find another person that has the same symptoms as I have and had a hip replacement & voila the knee pain is gone. I would appreciate any input.

I was convinced I needed a knee replacement as the knee pain was so so bad. The X-rays showed a healthy knee and bone on bone in the hip.

I did have knee pain from a bad OA left hip. I also have back issues (4 herniated discs). I just had the hip replacement and pain has dramatically decreased but I still have slight knee pain even though they said nothing was wrong with my knee. I have every faith that it will soon go away. I'm having to do physical therapy for a while. I recommend having the hip replacement.

Maggie, Thank goodness! You are the first person that showed the same pain symptoms in your knee that stemmed from your hip OA.. Did you have a THR? And did your knee pain go away?

Yes and yes. Although the opposite knee was a bit painful for a few days during recovery. Due I think, to my body posture changing as I recovered and stood and walked better, as I had been compensating for some time

Thank you Linda, I was beginning to think I was crazy because everything I have read about hip surgery said that it would fix the pain in your hip area & I don't have any pain there only bad pain in my knee area, but my knee is in good shape. ( had MRI, X-ray & ultrasound of knee) I also have some OA in my back, but mostly on the opposite side of my knee pain. I am all set for mini- posterior THR mid Sept. had to wait cuz had steroid injection into hip ( which made knee pain worse) . I hope all your knee pain goes away after more physical therapy.. Good luck with your recovery.

Good luck to you. I'm already a different person!

🤗👍

Yep both the physio and I were convinced the problem was in my knee, now 10 weeks post op still get a bit of pain down the side of knee and into shin but that's normal all good otherwise.

Hi I've also developed knee pain but I believe it's because now with the new hip my body has shifted My leg is longer than the other and I've also have a pelvic tilt. I'm going to have my other hip done in a few months and I'm hoping that will change things. I wish you well

I've also have knee pain on my other leg that now needs a THR. The pain goes down to the side of my leg and it's very painful. I was told I have hip bursitis on that leg so I assume it's from that as I didn't have that kind of pain on my other side

Much luck to you with your 2nd operation, I hope all turns out well for you.

Hi again! Yeh, my pain is in my knee and down the side of my knee.. some days can't put that leg down to walk it's like a sharp pain, it's really limiting my mobility. Can't wait to have THR in September.

dear merilee,

warm welcome to the hippies forum -

I see that you already recieved great feedback from fellow hipsters that has put your mind at ease -

I also had terriblepain in my knee - xray showed bone-on-bone of hip joint and my doctor wondered why I was not in more pain there --- I was not, but my knee felt so bad I had it taped by a physical therapist (did not really help but I felt more stable)

After THR surgery that knee pain is gone except for the sore muscles when becoming more acive -

I also had some dry needling done which gave some relief -

how are you getting on otherwise?  come back here any time you have a question or concern, okay

big warm hug

renee

Hi merilee

I had a childhood hip problem than the syptom is always referred pain in the knee. Slipped epyphis. I had it operated on at aged 12 and no more knee pain. 40 years later i developed OA in same hip and the old knee pain came back, tho I had hip pain too, but in bed and resting the knee pain was bad. Consultant told me referred pain from femoral nerve. 5 weeks after hip replacement and the knee pain was immediately gone. I had pain in the hip area as to be expected but as original op all those years ago not the knee. I asked my surgeon too see old hip joint and the worn area was to outer part of joint and inner part ok. Maybe groin pain if inner area worn, as I never had groin pain that I know is common. Only my theory of course! I delayed my hip replacement and suddenly deteriorated and was horrendous and wish had took my surgeons advice when he said was time. Hope all goes well and let us know how it all goes.x

Nan, thanks for your feedback.. back in January my Dr. 1st sent me to PT who was sure the pain was coming from my IT band cuz she had never seen a patient with referred knee pain from the hip & she had been doing PT for many years. After 3 months of PT & all diagnostic tests later, sure enough my knee looked fine & pain was definitely coming from moderate - severe OA in my hip. At least now, I realize I'm not the only one with only knee pain from hip OA! Continued success in recovery.

Most of my pain was in the knee and groin and side of my foot, I had low back pain that radiated into the butt cheek too...After surgery I had a black and blue knee that was very swollen along with the ankle. It looked like I had a knee replacement not a hip. Had xrays and MRI on knee, no arthritis just tissue swelling...Had a LTHR in 2015.

I have the same pains on the right side now, my knee really hurts when climbing steps, right hip needs to be replaced, probably will have that hip replaced next year.

Renee, warm hug back to you & all the hippies who take the time to share their experiences. I am so grateful to have found this forum & hope I can pass on helpful info to others. Wondering what dry needing is? Is it just the psyical therapist rubbing your knee🤓? I'm in Boston Ma. & feel good about the surgeon I chose. I'm struggling with trying to be active before Sept. surgery, but of coarse everyone step is a sharp knee pain. Any suggestions there? Thanks sooo much.

Loral, you don't know how comforting it has been to realize that I was not going crazy with doubting the Drs. saying after all the tests that I definitely needed THR. I only have knee pain! ( I shouldn't say only cuz I can hardly walk without shooting pain in my knee.) I also have some OA in my back, so I kept thinking what if the pain in my knee is from my back & I go ahead with THR & I still have knee pain. Well I do have moderate to severe OA in my hip so I need it replaced for sure & will see after the surgery if my knee pain goes. I will let you all know the outcome. Thanks for your input.

After the hip replacement the knee pain went away...I do have a bad back had a back MRI showed degenerative disc disease and 3 herniations and scoliosis, back Dr. sent me to hip Dr. xray showed bone on bone hip I suffered for over 2 years thinking it was related to my bad back.neutral

Good Luck!
