Hi everyone maybe someone can help to answer this. All my test are normal. Blood CT and ultrasound all just showing enlarged liver 21cm up and down. So my doctor just keeps writing it off as a healthy large liver and says I could just have been born with a larger liver like having a big nose. Not sure if it's possible to have a normal healthy liver that large has anymone seen that or am I That special lol thanks
My liver is 20cm measures by ct scan w/o contrast but it also mine says it appears to be Riedels lobe verses true hepatomegaly. I am having liver symptoms. I have every last one of the skin symptoms.
My comprehensive metabolic panel is normal. I go for ultrasound of my abdomen tomorrow to look at my liver.
I don't know much about liver problems but I hope all turns out well for you ♡
I'm sorry I am on my phone and noticed many mistakes lol...
I think if you aren't having any symptoms and your Dr says all appears well with your liver then perhaps maybe you were like you said born that way ♡
Doc is right: we are all different, even internally. If you've no other symptoms, I shouldn't worry.
Paul, Like you my CT, ultrasound and MRI all showed enlarged liver together with dilated bile duct so had a special test called ERCP last Tuesday which did not unfortunately go according to plan and I ended up in a High Dependency Unit for 3 days plus a normal ward for 4 days. However, the good news is that the endoscopist haas reassured me that some people are born with a larger than normal liver and he thinks that is so in my case.
I was wondering how your test went Gill.. I am sorry to hear you went through so much but happy to hear all seems to be well...
I had my ultrasound and I guess I have a few things going on with my liver. I am now waiting to see a gastro.
Update as from Monday. I saw a liver specialist in Leeds and in fact there is a major problem. I have loads of stones in my liver which is why it is enlarged and the cause is probably a rare genetic disease called Caroli's. As a result I will have to have part of my live removed in the near future
I am very sorry to hear this
I'm glad they have a plan to make things better though.
I am still in limbo but will be seeing a specialist in the 25th. I am having bad pains now but am unsure if it's related. When will you be having surgery?
I wish I knew how to edit my response lol
I had ultrasound done that says "diffuse increased echogenicity of the liver suggesting hepatocelluar disease likely caused by fatty liver". I can't wait to see a specialist because it's like regular Drs don't know much.
I am waiting to hear but I. hoPe in the next few months.
it is true - most doctors don' t know much about liver disease and if they do they cannot explain it in ways the average person can understand! What is fatty liver - do you know?
It's very hard when you get a diagnosis like that, Gill. I remember getting my cancer diagnosis. It just seemed so unfair as I've never smoked and the most I ever drank was a glass of wine with my meal on Sundays. I also always ate healthily and was even vegetarian for a number of years. I had gradually put weight on over a number of years but that may have been due to an ailing gallbladder. Think I am genetically predisposed to gallbladder issues (father, mother, paternal uncle).
Can I ask what symptoms led you to have tests?
The liver resection was not as bad as I imagined. Also the liver quickly regenerates - within weeks- and they can remove huge amounts relatively safely these days.
I wish you well for the forthcoming surgery and your recovery. Let me know if there's anything you think I may be able to help with. Thinking of you.
Actually I had no symptoms, it was found incidentally when I was having investigations for iron deficiency anaemia as I am over 60. A CT scan of the liver showed it was very swollen and it went on from there. I will get in touch when I have a date for surgery
Can you tell me whether your liver resection was done by keyhole or open surgery? Prof Toogood is hoping to do mine by keyhole surgery as it is only segment 3 of mine which has to be removed at the moment. I hope it is keyhole surgery so I am not in hospital too long. I am a wheelchair user as a result of childhood polio and my home is adapted to my specific needs - hospitals aren't!!
Just out of interest Paul how do you know your liver is 21cm and how do you know how big it should be? I have been told I have a swollen/enlarged liver but no doctor or consultant has ever told me how big it is or how big it should be, and I cannot find that information in the various places I have looked.
I did a CT scan and they measured it on there. So far all blood is normal and so is the ultrasound. Going to a 3rd specialist from UM to get his advise to see. How was your liver blood work was anything elevated?
Mine is 20cm and was also told it's enlarged via ct scan results that I had for a different reason. You can fine online what they should measure.. I think 15cm any thing under 15cm is normal.
Was your blood work normal also and what has happen since it's 20cm are you healthy no liver issues or you have issues. I went to a 2nd liver doctor who told me he sees many normal healthy livers that people are born that way and it's normally 🙃 Not sure what's true anymore but going to see a top UM specialist for liver
Yes all my blood work is normal so far... I have many skin symptoms of liver disease, practically all of them. The ct scan was done in early May and I had an ultrasound a few weeks ago that says I have hepatocelluar disease likely caused by fatty liver. I have no idea what it means but I'm going to a liver specialist at university of Miami on August 25th.
I haven't been feeling well for a few weeks now. It started with lightheadness back in May and now my joints and my bones hurt, I have no energy, tired all the time and just feel like crap.
I had the ct scan for another reason and no one said anything about my enlarged liver. I didn't find out about it till I got a copy of the report. The ct scan was done w/o contrast and I probably would have gotten more info from one with contrast. I have a nagging pain on my upper right side rib cage area and also in my right front rib cage but the pain is worse in my back rib cage area.
