Dear all I got diagnosed with a fatty liver 6 months ago I have a pain in my right side hurts like hell some days other days not as bad trapped gas makes it worse now since then I've gone from 15st to 13st I run 30 miles a week I do half marathons etc but pain is still there getting me down now I was under the impression lose weight fat it'll go but no different really now I know I'm still overweight but will this ever go I know it's nerve endings that cause the pain I guess certain foods don't help but not sure what as I see a lot of doctors just say you've a fatty liver best you get of them lose weight that's it my belly is still fat but no where near what it was I was 18st a year ago as I say lots of excercise but pain just as bad if I release gas tends to feel bit better I don't drink or smoke any advice greatly appreciated or people who had it and got better
The liver has no nerve endings, it does not give painful feelings. Is it upper right quadrant?
Hi mate I think your doing the correct things, keep drinking loads of water, eat the right foods, and avoid sugars and fatty foods as sugar for me triggers a flare up! And running for me gives me so much relief! After a good run pretty much all the pain goes but does come back over the next day or so!! Not sure why but it defo works for me, your lucky in some ways as you have a diagnosis I've had liver area pain for nearly 20 years blood always perfect except for high cholesterol and ultra sound good too, your learn pretty quickly that unless your yellow with a pot belly and a red nose the medical profession don't give you the time of day! I have so many of what seam like the obvious signs of liver problems that I find it so frustrating! I find myself not going to doctors anymore unless I'm feeling really unwell!! Anxiety apparently but I know it's my liver!!!!! Just looking to pay for a private Fibroscan apparently as good as a biopsy! Good luck and keep me updated Simon aged 43
Hi I here this said many times so why do nearly all people with liver problems complain of upper right quadrant pain?
Thanks Simon for reply really interesting I did go to hospital at one point as the pain was bad doctor there did say just keep losing weight and excercise just as you will know gets you Down at times some days good some bad I agree after a run feel great but then it comes back bl
No it's below ribs I know the liver has no nerves it enlarges and touches nerves around it hence fatty liver its enlarged touching nerves
Hello I too have fatty liver (I'm also T2 diabetic). I get discomfort under right rib radiating to the back below my right shoulder blade. I am slowly losing weight to improve things but it's going to be long and slow. My LFT's all come back OK and due to have them done again soon. My gallbladder and pancreas showed up ok on scan apart from liver cyst and fatty liver. It's annoying.
Have you had an abdominal ultrasound?
Yes they was checking for gallstones but nothing just said got a fatty liver
I'm also T2 diabetic we will get there
I'd like a Fibroscan but know I will get a No from my doctor if I asked cos they are expensive. Ferritin levels are a good way of checking for liver damage, I'm having my next set of LFT's soon.
I'm booked in next week in Bristol £200 money we'll spent I'd say!!!!!
Do let us know how you get on with it cos if it is worth having I may well start saving up for one.
I will do I'm having it on the 27th Thursday
Am getting nervous about my forthcomng LFT's. It does worry me now knowing i have fatty liver (on top of everything else) but i am trying to rectify this with weight loss and excercis (not easy). So far, my LFT results have come back OK. I saw a programme last night 'GP's behind closed doors' and an alcoholic chap was one of the patents and his LFT's were in the hundreds and he had cirihossis of the liver. I think he was still drinking as the doctor was trying to point out to him how important it was for him to quit. I don't drink (only the odd glass of wine at special occasions) so feel a bit upset that i have NAFLD but doctors don't tend to worry about this as much as i do. Do they doctors only 'worry' about things when it gets to a point where something has to be done?
Your diet is also important in dealing with fatty liver. Stop eating takeaways and boxed/oven/microwave dinners and eat home made food. Do not equate foods with fat as bad, the body is made up of fat and it requires it to function. Fat like protein keeps us feeling fuller for longer. The bad things is carbs, the unused sugar turns to fat and virtually everything we eat these days is full of sugar and carbs.
Think about it, you see blokes with beer bellies, how much fat is in beer? None, it is all carbs that turns to fat.
Thanks for your reply. Yes it does make sense. Since i have cut down my carbs and sugar intake my BS levels (i'm T2 diabetic) have improved and hope it will also improve my fatty liver. I watched an interesting programme last night about Fat and Carbs.
Hello sir , I'm same as you 1972 vintage with liver and scapula pain waiting for fibroscan on NHS , has your pain eased yet. ?
Thanks Mark

I just wrote out a huge reply and it got bloody deleted. I'll try and be a brief but basically whilst you are correct that excess carbs though you should stress excess refined and simple carbohydrates will also add to a calorie problem if overeating.. it is mainly dietary fat even healthy fat in excess which causes the cells to become saturated and unable to accept sugar which causes the pancreas to stress out producing more and more insulin. Fructose is also a problem in high fructose corn syrup. But the main culprit is animal fats meat cheese and dairy. Even so cold healthy meats like chicken and fish are heavily linked with diabetes and I am living proof.
I understand your position, but I disagree. I eat plenty of cheese, butter, full fat milk, eggs and if I have a steak with a bit of fat on it, I eat that as well, rather than cut it off. Our system uses fat to digest food. I went down this route after an acute hospital dietician recommended this to me. I do however eat porridge everyday for breakfast - normal boring porridge with nothing added.
My cholesterol is 4.2.
Fructose and similar is the problem, animal and dairy fats, no. We will have to agree to disagree.
