New pain

I am 3 weeks post op and having been making steady progress--following all my prescribed PT exercises, taking short walks, icing, and not violating restrictions.  Two days ago I started getting a strange pain/heaviness in buttocks directly behind hip area.  Now side of hip is hurting.  It is a different kind of pain/ache than I have been experiencing.  It feels more like it is catching or heavy. It is hurting to do some of the exercises and even when I am sitting.  Was at the doctor's two days ago for checkup--everything looked good.  Is this just part of the healing process? Anyone else experience this type of set back?

Hi Tammie Sorry you are in pain.

Going to your GP with hip problems is no good. You need to go to the hospital and see your surgeon. He will probably x ray your hip and make suere everything is ok. I would phone the hospital and ask to speak to his secretary and make an appointment. Better to make sure than to keep suffering.

Hello! I am 3 1/2 weeks post op and very relieved to see your post. I am getting the same ache in the buttocks (feels like its in the actual joint) and also a little in the groin muscle when I do excersizes. It seems to hurt more in the morning when I wake up, and Im not taking anything but IB profin for pain so some mornings are difficult. I have asked around and apparently it is normal to get more pain, even new pain at this stage. Its probably due to being more active. Its a little discouraging, but it should eventually pass...

I am 1 week into this just had a left hip replacement ceramic and am experiencing the pain you are describing been in touch with the occupational therapist and he says quite normal as your body will take at least 6 to 7 weeks to adjust if you have concerns go back to where you had it done and definitely get another opinion hope this helps.

The doctor I went to was the surgeon--took an xray & everything looked good.  Just finished PT and a walk.  It seems to have loosened up a bit.  My PT thinks it is muscle spasms that are 'catching' and recommended some stretches to do if it starts tightening up again.  For now---ice.

Good morning Tammie ... sounds familiar ... I was convinced that the pain came from the new hip thing because it did NOT feel like muscle pain - I complained to my physical therapist who just waived it away and told me that it was the muscle - well, after a couple of weeks (!!) she finally made me lie on the table and started to massage that spot .... and it IS the muscle !!! I got relief and have to say that it feels better - not gone yet though ... maybe she couldn't massage it before, I don't know ... I am 11 + weeks post op  - if it is not one thing than it is another ... sigh .... good to know that your xray is good - ask your PT if he/she can massage it ... marching on and forward .... big hug

Hi tammie glad you went and saw your surgeon, hope by doing the stretching that it eases but you are still only 3 weeks post ops and ater the trauma the body has taken it is no wonder we are finding other things causing us problems. I really hope it sorts itself out for you as you know what pain you had before the operation and hopefully that has gone.
