I recently had unprotected sex with a new partner both oral & intercourse. 2 days after I developed sores on my labia they I quickly had tested and came back Type 1. I don't believe I've ever had an oral cold sore before. My questions are so can I now pass the genital Type 1 to someone else through both oral & intercourse? What has other people's experience been with this diagnosis. My outbreak seem extremely mild compared to one's of read about on here and other forums. I got on Valtrex on day 3 of outbreak. It's now day 9 and symptoms are practically gone. I'm just concerned about passing it on now. Thanks for your help.
Everyone with genital herpes is most infectious within the first year, and within the first 3-4 months in particular, as your body has yet to establish a full immune response. However, Type 1 fortunately recurs and sheds far less.
So, there is still the possibility to autoinoculate yourself (until 3-4 months; 6 months to be extra cautious) and potentially infect others, but the good thing is that many people already have established oral HSV-1, which largely protects against acquiring it genitally.
HSV-1 does not often spread through sexual intercourse alone, even with an HSV-1 negative partner, except possibly during an outbreak and via receptive oral sex. Just be cautious at first, learn the signs of GH in your body, and take common sense hygiene/protective measures.
Daily suppressive therapy is not normally suggested for Type 1, unless outbreaks are frequent, which is unusual. You will probably only have one outbreak a year, if that.
So as I'm reading more it's possible he could have HSV 1 genitally also so I could of gotten from either oral or vaginal sex, there's really no way to know correct?
Do I need a blood test if my swab came back positive for Type 1?
Usually, Type 1 is acquired via oral sex. If your swab is positive, it's not necessary to do the blood test, unless you want to determine whether you already had it, in which case test sooner rather than later. Or if you want extra confirmation, then test in 3-4 months.
