my elderly mum was diagnosed with et about two years ago. Given hydroxyurea and tolerated drug well. All was going well until 6 months ago when she developed anaemia and has had a no. of tranfusions since. told at hospital that red blod cells are not being produced though original problems with et are fine .Has had further bone marrow aspirations No change to marrow but feels very ill within 3 weeks of blood transfusion. experts not sure what is wrong. Has been taking digoxin for approx 15 yrs and has close female family member with pernicious anaemia. has anyone else encountered these problems?
Your mother can have an Iron based transfusion instead which can last for upto two years plus she should be given a series of B-12 shots from her family doctor and take multi-Bs everyday
If you are consult to doctor and taking medicine than its good for you.
Had pernicious anaemia, so you are treated with a course of Vitamin B-12 at your GPs plus given a prescription of Multi-Vit Bs to take every day. And for the Non-Haemoglobin count either a course of Iron injections at GPs or referred to the Haemotology Dept, for an Iron Transfusion. At your mothers age, she will also be most likey not producing red blood cells due to osteoporosis so will also need to have an ultrasound thigh bone analysis. If found to be osteoporosis she will need a calcium transfusion. My own mother who is 74 had these two procedures done last year. Both her iron and calcium are back to normal.
