Pain upon standing

Hi all,

I am nearly 7 weeks out, things are going very well. However, I still have the pain/stiffness upon standing, and the first few steps are still awkward and some what painful. Does anyone else remember experiencing this at this stage? I'm'not complaining, overall I'm very pleased. I'm just wondering if I should be concerned or is this to be expected. Thank you!

hi

at that stage I was told by physio to strengthen my operated leg which should help. she gave me exercises standing on operated leg only for a few minutes and raising my operated leg outwards and just generally getting it to strengthen.

I certainly remember being stiff after sitting down for a while. When you think of all the cut muscles it's not surprising. They take a long time to heal. I'm now 5 months. I don't get the stiffness after sitting now but am still a bit achy if I do a lot of exercise.

I have the same problem and I have opened a new discussion a few weeks ago on this very topic...almost everyone agreed that it's hard to get up from sitting dowm, and  the first steps are awkward and strange...

Hi Karen,

I can identify completely.  That has been my biggest complaint so far.  I am 3 1/2 months out from a posterior uncemented RTHR.  I did all the physio, butt clenches, etc and still had those painful first steps.  At my three month follow up my doctor said I shouldn't be having that pain and walking with a limp.  He thought maybe the physio had been too rough and that I had overdone it and that the place where the stem is in the thigh was inflamed and irritated.  He prescribed an anti-inflammatory and that has helped a lot.  I've been trying to take it a little easier and the pain is getting better.

Also, if I'm in a meeting at work I will flex my feet and tap my legs to keep things moving.

Thank you, Maggie. They have been working me hard at physio. My left leg is still very weak from years of favoring due to bone-on-bone osteoarthritis,  I will try the outward movement exercises because they really haven't done too much of that. Thank you smile

Thank you, it's good to know that this is common and it improves in time. cheesygrin

Yes! I remember your post. Mine feels the same except I have pain also. It sort of feels like the new titanium hip wants to push through my thigh. When I have sat a long time or had a particularly busy day, it's much more prominent. Otherwise I feel good and hopefully my limp will be erradicated by the 12 week mark!

Thank you smile

I'm 7 weeks out and that is my biggest concern. Everyone has described it as stiff or awkward, which I have also, but it is actually painful. Almost like the thigh bone wants to push through the skin when I first stand up and take my first 3-4 steps. I really hope this gets better soon, it's annoying. Thanks for your reply and have a great weekend!

Dear Karen,

sorry I have been travelling and only just read your post. I am 10 months after left hip replacement and I totally remember the pain your are talking about. It was intense and always happened after I had been sitting for awhile and lasted for the first 5 or 6 steps. I got it up to about 4 months. I occasionally get an ache in my groin now. Don't worry I'm sure everything will gradually be fine. I found that exercising in the pool really helped to strengthen my muscles. Good luck

Betty

I agree that is more pain than stiffness.  It's weird that it hurts starting out and then no pain once you get going.  It is nice that we can compare notes with other people so you know other people have the same issue.   Best of luck to you in your recovery.
