Posterior repair advice - how did you feel?

Hi everyone - I'm just under five weeks posterior repair surgery. If you have had the surgery how did you feel at the same time? I am worried as at the moment I feel I still have the prolapse and I actually feel more uncomfortable/pain now than I did before the op. I still have pain/discomfort when going to the toilet and don't feel any different than that, is this normal? I'm still taking Lactulose twice a day and senacot every other day and drinking and eating healthy and resting lots even though I am still uncomfortable sitting and standing and lying down! I am at my post op on the 23rd and I just wondered how everyone felt up to six weeks as at the moment it feels like it's failed for me and getting me down sad Anyone's personal experience of this would be appreciated, thank you

donna as I mentioned in a previous post I felt exactly the same and so do a lot of women. You'll read about how ladies go back to work at 5 weeks but that's very rare and I certainly wouldn't advise it because it's far too early even if you do feel well. The nature of this surgery is that you often feel worse and in more pain than you did initially and we tell all our patients that. The reason why you feel you still have a prolapse is because you're swollen and I can assure you if you saw the operation you'd understand why. Everything you describe is normal, I've been through it and have nursing experience in urogynaecology as well. When you feel tired your body is telling you to rest. Mother Nature is very clever at telling the body when to take things slowly and everyone recovers at different rates anyway so my mantra is "listen to your body", everything will be fine but this is major surgery so treat it as so.

Thank you for your reply! I have been worrying over the last few weeks as to whether I should be feeling better or not or whether it is all part of the recovery, so thank you for the reassurance! I am back to my post op check in just over a week and I am signed off until then but I am worried about work as I do a physical job which means I work continually on my feet for four hours pulling and stretching, I think I'm going to need more time before I go back as at the moment I'm struggling just walking around the house in brief amounts. Thank you for your advice, it's very much appreciated

You will need more time off work. I went back after 13 weeks on a graduated return and  I was mainly office based then rather than on the wards but driving to meetings quite a bit as well. As you have a physical job I'd advise the same if you can because you don't want to undo all the good work your surgeon has done and you'll feel like me you don't want to go through it all again! Take care and look after yourself because it will be worth it x

Hi, Donna 😁 I checked my dairy at four to five week after post op.

I had lots of pain and some fever. I only could walk around in the house. I missed daughter's swimming carnival and ceremony. I was depressed and deeply regretted having had the surgery.

I have had some more problems since then. Matron and ladies include you helped me here even tonight lol

At 11 week, I feel like backing to yoga as you know. I still feel uncomfortable sitting for hours but no pain any more.

You are not only one. You will feel better soon. Please take it easy and feets up as much as possible. Warm up around tummy and feets healed my pain. I'm cuddling a hot water bottle on my tummy now.

Take care xxx

Hello Donna,

like the others I too felt the same at 5 weeks I'm only 6 weeks now and still uncomfortable a lot of the time.  My swelling seems to be a little less now and I was only brave enough a few days ago to take a look. I'm quite surprised with the difference and really hoping I can continue to heal well and this is me finished.

I'm six mos pro op now, I didn't even start exercises till three mos, and that wad mostly kegels j pelvic floor exercise, long healing process up to a year, good luck

I am seven weeks post op and still very uncomfortable although in the last week I have been able to sit on a chair without that painful lump feeling and like you was starting to think it had not worked but my GP examined me the other day and assured me that the repair looked as if it was healing nicely. I am having lots of bladder problems still and taking Lavido as a stool softener. I also feel very fed up. They warned me I might feel like this but being normally such a positive person I thought I would be fine. At least we can have a moan together on here and in a couple more weeks we will start to feel a lot better. I think judging by what others have written this is fairly normal but hope I never have to go through it again! Keep omparing and we will laugh about it all in a few weeks! I have to wait till March for my post op appointment whih seems a long way off so I was quite relieved that GP had a look

angela reading your post just reminded me how important the 6 week post op check is. It is becoming more and more rare for urogynaecologists to perform this check but wouldn't it alleviate so many anxieties? I'm pleased your repair is healing well x

Hi Donna, I had rectocele surgery last 14 Dec and I also thought that the surgery had failed because I didn't feel almost any difference during the BM and I continued feeling the bulge, fortunately I wrote here and Matron said it was normal to feel like that. Happily I went yesterday to the 1 month check up and dr said that everything was going fine, I also feel that the BM are easier day after day although the pain has almost gone away I still have discomfort and the feeling that I have something down there and stings quite often. Dr said yesterday that I still have many stitches inside, and that in ten days I can have sex, he gave me a lot of samples of lub!!! Let's see if I feel like having sex like this 😬 Hugs!!!!

Hi Im now coming up to 4 months post op. You are still in the early stages of recovery at less than 5 weeks. During those early weeks I found it difficult to walk taking normal sized steps ! and experienced a stinging pinching feeling, which had me back on pain killers for a couple of weeks .After reading thru older posts on this forum I believe the feeling I was experiencing was normal and was the nerve ends repairing. Our bodies have been thru a lot and we are still healing . Take care hopefully what you are experiencing is normal. As Matron has said listen to your body and remember you have had a major operation. cheers Kath

Hi ladies,

Won't go through my experience - much the same as everyone else's! - but if you are having problems with bm s try - Aloe Vera juice, I don,t have to take anything else! Give it a try.

Its funny you should say that because I have just asked my partner to get me some Aloe Vera as not drinking enough water as it tastes horrible and I love the aloe vera juice. It helped me with IBS too.

Well I dont know what to do now-i have been treated all week on antibiotics for a suspected urine infestion and results have come back today with no infection. However i am still running up and down the stairs needing to pass urine and could not possibly leave the house. The receptionist said they have no appointments for the GP I saw last week for three weeks and no other appointments at their nearest practice so I have got an appointment for next week at a different health centre that is a partner. If it is no better in the next couple of days UI will have to get an emergency appointment as finished the antibiotics

Thank you for replying, sorry for the delay but I've felt really unwell the lastfew days I do not know if it is linked or not as I think similar people have had the same symptoms but I feel I have a urine or bladder infection as on top of the other it hurts to empty my bladder and even when I have I feel like I need to go again especially if I lie down! But I also feel flu like and have headache and sore throat!!!! Thank you for your advice

Thank you for your reply and help and advice i really appreciate you letting me know how you felt at the same time. Take care and all the best with your recovery x

Hi, thank you for your reply and letting me know how you felt at the same time. I think you are brave to take a look I don't think I'll be attempting that but I am curious and very scared for the consultant to examine me at the six week check, I just hope things will be ok! Good luck with your recovery, take care x

Thank you for replying and telling me how your recovery is going and reassuring me that i shouldn't do too much too soon, thank you! Good luck with your continuing recovery, take care x

Hi thank you for your reply and letting me know how your recovery is going. The help have received and the other stories i have read on this site have been invaluable! Yes i have felt exactly the same as you, I thought I had prepared myself for the recovery but I hadn't really as I have been so scared of it failing etc and how down I've felt about it! I didn' t think at week 5 I'd feel worse than week 1. Good luck with your recovery, take care x

Hi thank you for your reply and letting me know how your recovery is going. I remember putting a post on after week 1 and I think you were one that replied - glad to hear your recovery is on schedule - I have my 6 week post op appt next week so I am curious/scared of how things are! I am so glad of the help/advice i have received on here otherwise I think I'd of gone crazy! Good luck with your intimacy - I feel far off ready for that at the moment but it doesn't help that I have urine/bladder infection symptoms aswell now, good luck with your continuing recovery x
