Red patch on head of penis.

Hi, I have a small red patch of skin on the head of my penis. It appeared about a month ago and it doesn't seem to have changed colour or size at all. It isn't painful and doesn't itch. Can anybody give me any advise? I have a attached a photo. Thanks!

Hi, most cases like this are very straightforward, most likely the simple form of Balanitis, or alternatively, Psoriasis - I would start by reading the two pages linked below on this Patient website.  Make sure you read all the way through it as it has the link to the psoriasis information.

If you are sexually active you need to check out the "What can cause balanitis?" page, in particular, while unlikely to be any form of STD/STI - it may be something that your partner is using (quite innocently) that is irritating the skin of the head of your penis.  Try these first: -

Good Luck ......

Thanks for your reply Wee Dugie, I will see if an anti fungal cream will help. Is it possible for balanitis to not cause any pain or irritation? Everything I've read seems to indicate that it would. Thanks again.

I think it possible to habituate to things going on for your penis not to notice it.  I was eventually diagnosed with the chronic version of the condition [BXO / Lichen Sclerosis] and I would say the majority of the time I had it I was not aware of it.

Also, until you try the anti-fungal you won't know what you are dealing with, unless you can isolate an irritant that has caused it in the first place, you may have a form of Psoriasis, or even, something else.

Good Luck ....

I've been using Clotrimazone 1% for a week now and there doesn't seem to be any change at all. Should I continue using the cream or try something else?

I would give any medication a few weeks, unless it were making the situation worse.

Did you prescribe this for yourself, or did you check it with a pharmacist or medical professional?
