hi I have been taking this drug by injection for over 3 years and have found it to be really beneficial in reducing pain and stiffness in my joints caused by RA. However after a few months I noticed slight lesions just inside my mouth which have become more inflamed recently. My specialist says this is not due to the methotrexate but my GP says it probably is. Does anyone else suffer with this?
Hi, I've been on Mtx (& Enbrel) a similar time to you. First as tablets and for the last 2.5 yrs in pen format. When I took it in tablet form, mouth ulcers were one of the side effects I suffered from. I'd often have between 1 & 4 or more.... very painful and stopped me eating or even having a hot drink. They were one of the reasons for switching to the injectable form. My Rheumatologist told me that I was getting them due to the Mtx and that they are a well-known side effect.
I have been on Metrox. 7.5 for a month as well as in creasing my pred. to 10 and am loosing my hair. Not clumps, but more then have in thickness in 1 month, what am I in for, does anyone know. I have not had mouth sores at least yet.
It is a known side effect of MTX.
I am taking MTX for an oral autoimmune disease, which involves blisters/lesions anyway. I try all sorts on them. Some people find Gengigel gel useful. I use Corsodyl mouthwash, which helps a little. A MaxFax surgeon told me to use Corsodyl gel to rub on the lesions but it is very difficult because the gel is too runny to rub on.
My Dermatologist also gave me some zinc to take. It is in the form of effervescent tablets which I 'swoosh & swig'!
How are the mouth ulcers now?
Yes hair thinning is something I have as well, especially when washing it. My hair was once very thick and now a lot less but I don't think there is a solution. Remember not everyone suffers with these side effects so you may not get mouth problems. Time will tell. As long as you get good benefits from the medication.
Thanks for advice. Cleaning teeth is difficult trying to to keep the toothbrush clear of the lesions and a check up at the dentist is something I keep putting off!
Gengigel is very expensive but you might find it helpful. When I can't clean my teeth, I use Corsodyl. I also saw a Hygienist and she was very gentle. I have found that it is easier to clean my teeth with an electric toothbrush.

Folic acid cleared my mouth sores right up
Hi Brenda, I now take folic acid every 2 days instead of once or twice a week, because of my blood results. Unfortunately after five weeks it has not improved my mouth sores. I think its a case of what works for one person may not work for another! Thanks anyway.
