Small pets a NO?

I'm having THP in a few weeks and everything I've read says no small pets in the home during recovery.  I understand why, but what would I do with 2 dogs and a cat for six weeks?  Did anyone keeps their pets at home and have problems?

I have 2 cats and thwy sometimes get underfoot..I was just always cautious as to where they were and always keot an eye out..I managed fine..I just had to have someone clean the litter box for me.

Good luck..im sure u will be fine

Hi Lindy! I stayed at my brother's house for the first 2 weeks. I live alone so it worked out well. I have 3 cats and like Hopetogroove said, just be cautious. I used a long handled litter scooper to clean out their boxes. I wouls suggest somebody take the dogs out for their walks for the first few weeks. Good luck to you!

Hi lindy

I had no issues with my 2 cats and 5 dogs. It is all about keeping everything clean and not touching your wound without washing your hands thoroughly. If the dogs / cats want to sit with you have a clean blanket over your legs between you and that animal. I would also bath your dogs and not have any cat litter trays in the same rooms as you are going to be in. It is more just common sence. I have had loads done to me in the last two years and have never not had my animals not able to be with me.

Dear Lindy,

welcome to the best forum for hippies (pre- and post op) where you will find love, support, great tips and great companion - We share our personal experiences, the good, not so good and down right ugly ....

The risk of tripping with small pets around is, of course, what they worry about as well as cleaning of litter box and walking the puppies ...

Hailea has good advice - do you have anybody to walk the dogs and perhaps clean the litter box?

Are they well behaved ? just asking as you do need a lot of rest in the first days .. Someone wrote that she put the bowls on the counter top to feed them - do you have space or that ?

there are a lot of practical things to consider - I sincerely hope that you will find someone to help you out so the pets can stay with you ...

A pet service maybe? Not sure if they have them here - it is a big thing in Los Angeles !!!

take care Lindy --it will be alright -

warm hug

Hi as with everyone else here I have a pet, a very lively JRT called Duke. He was no bother at all he soon got used to me walking round with my stick and I just made sure he wasn't under my feet in the kitchen. I had a friend who walked him for me for the first month. To be honest I wouldn't be without him he was a great companion and he seemed to adapt to my speed and calmed down and sat with me. Now I am 14 weeks post op and mobile he's back to his old self. Don't worry just take more care. Good luck with your op. x

Hmmm I never heard that one. I have 2,cats and a pug and I would think of shipping them out while I recovered. I think they tell you that because perhaps, you get trip over them?,

I've not heard that before either. I have six cats and two lively working cockers and I survived OK. You just need to be very cautious where you step and not let them jump all over you (dogs of course not cats). I can't see a problem.

Hi Lindy,

I have not heard/been told this either, in fact I would probably dropped of my perch if they had said it to me 😱

I had a LTHR following an accident in which I had multiple injuries/fractures so potentially at greater risk, the consultant and all the staff were fully aware of my huge family of animals (including horses) and that I live alone.

My dogs are large so I have always used elivated feeding bowls and that was easy, my cats don't use litter trays but the horse feeding buckets are heavy and twice daily haynets need filling. I did have friends walk the dogs for two weeks but managed everything else myself except for taking the wheelbarrow full of horse droppings to the manure heap.

My recovery would have been hampered by not having my animals around me, I even coped with a bitch in season and 40kg of a rampant testosterone pup 😂 so take heart, you will be fine, as others have said, its common sense and take your time. Very best wishes, Dot x

Thanks Dot,  I agree, I need my pets for moral support!  I feel better having read the replies.  I have a daughter who will be helping out with the dogs, etc.  I was more worried about my 2-year-old granddaughter than I was the dogs, lol

Thanks gillian!  The "no pets" warning kept popping up in all the research I was doing.  I feel better about it now!

Yes, I guess better safe than sorry is the idea.  I just couldn't see the issue being a problem for me!  Thanks Susan.

Thanks Hope!

Thanks Miele, I'm going to look for a long handled scooper!

Thanks Hailea,  Great advice!  I'd be so worried about my pets if I had to board them, I know it would affect my recovery.

Thanks Christine, I hope my dogs are as smart as yours and calm down too!

This is my 9 month old 40Kg baby, tripping over him was not a worry but being taken down like a stack of cards did enter my head but it's as though they understand, 2yr old grandaughter might be a tad more problematic X

They didn't tell me to do anything about my cat. They asked if I had a pet pre op but I thought that was to do with possible infection.

I was just careful when she came near me after the op. At first she kept her distance possibly because of the crutches. It's very soothing though to have a pet to stroke when you're in pain and feeling a bit down!
