So happy i decided to go ahead with a replacement

On Tuesday it will be 8 months since my left hip replacement....and I am so pleased I had it done. Took me 2 years of denial before discomfort won me over. The mental thing was the biggest problem....I saw myself as an invalid for a while. After 6 months I was taking part in Athletics again , and my achievements are now better that ever. I am free of any discomfort and sometimes I forget which hip was done....I followed rules in the beginning , but most of the time my body told me what I can do and what not , and slowly it allowed me more and more....thank you body...I looked after you all my life and now you looked after me....Thank you God for stopping me from drinking and smoking and bad diets and lack of exercise.....I now reap the benefits....

Hello,  Nic, so pleased to read this just now. My mum goes in for a hip replacement today and I've been worrying. Your story gives me a lot of encouragement. She doesn't drink, smoke, or eat badly. And she follows direction! So I'm hopeful.

So pleased to hear you're doing well.

What wonderful news.  I am happy for you and can hear it in your voice of what i read that you have a new life and you are so thankful.  This is awesome.  Right now I am waiting for a go on myself as I just got medical insurance and have been waiting for more then 10 years.  I also thank God for helping me each day of my life.  It is wondeful to receive such blessings.

Hi Bunnyg...did I mention that I turned 70 in June.....it is not so bad...in the beginning you want to cry....but remember...it is big trauma for the body...it is fine and then 2 hrs later it wakes up with major trauma and it rwesponds with every thing it can muster....it will be very confused for a while...just have faith that it will get better slowly , and then one day suddenly she will experience a major improvement all round....

Hi Nic

Great to get such a positive post with such good results post THR So many of us have had bad results that its nice to hear someone who is so pleased with their new hip

Long may it continue

Hi Evelyn....have faith...the results after the opp.will be so fantastic....please remember...it will be bad for a time after the opp. , maybe worse than what you immagine....but the improvent day by day will be so fantastic you will want to dance for joy....you will be without pain eventually and probably for ever therafter......just hold onto that....

Thank you.....I need to hear the "Good News".  Right now I am at my limit.  I can't do houseware or cook for myself.  Life stopped but I know that after you come to the place you are weak the Lord gives you His strenght to carry on.  Thank you so much for sharing.

Hi Nic,

So pleased to hear of the success you have had with your THR. I joined this group becused I experience problms with pain in my right thhigh but now realise that there are a lot of people a lot worse off then me. It is heartening to hear of success for a change. I wish you continued good health and thank  you for your post.

Hi Sue...nice name...my wife is also Sue....it was difficult for us before the opp.My wife has COPD with 20% lung capacity and I have to be mobile to push her around in the wheelchair...I had to recover in double quick time and I think a Higher Hand had something to do with that...somehow I ended up with this fantastic Surgeon and his team and physiotherapist...all of them had a deciding influence in my speedy recovery. I was walking un-aided and driving after just 10 days.....that is a miracle in my book. I pray that you will quickly receive relieve from the pain and that a full recovery is on the way...I TRUST that is posible....

Oh Evelyn....that must be so disheartening....you have an opp. te get better , just to have other discomfort take over...but TRUST me...the body has amasing capabillities to recover and heal itself....just give it what it needs and it will give you what you need...talk to it....apologise if you have to and say sorry for neglecting it at times in the past...it will respond in a way that will be nothing short of a miracle....BELIEVE IT....You have reached that place from where a turn-around will happen....

Hello Nic!  So pleased to read your positive comments!  I too was in denial for over a year before my op.  My husband and daughter kept badgering me to have it done! I will be 12 weeks on Monday and just so pleased I finally agreed.  Still getting some discomfort, now and then, but realise muscles etc are still knitting back together.  It's so good to be able to "walk tall" instead of limping and dragging my leg! Long may it continue for you!

Hi Nic..pleased you've had a good outcome, and all those years of suffering are behind you..it really can be a life changer.

I too had a LTHR back in Feb.,which was also successful.

I to suffered for years before the pain became to much to bear.

Ive been doing well up to the last 8wks but now unfortunately my right hip has given up on me,and I'm waiting for that to be replaced.

I have been doing 10k every other day on an exercise bike to build up the quad muscles pre op.

The bad right hip doesn't hurt whilst riding, but the next day I can sometimes hardly put any weight on it..anybody had this experience??

My surgeon says using the bike shouldn't do any harm, but I'm not to sure.

Any thoughts guys?

Ive been using an exercise bike, doing about 10k in 30mins every other day to build up the quad muscles pre op.

I have no pain whilst riding, but the next day I can sometimes hardly put any weight on the right hip at al

Anybody any thoughts as to why this should be,and should I keep using the bike??

My surgeon says it won't do any harm, but I'm not to sure?

Sorry about the double entry..oops.

not worked out how to edit a post yet,or if it's possible.

Great Pat.... your writing also gives hope to others that a full recovery is posible.....it took all of 6 months for most of the muscle groups to stand up to throwing discus and shotput and hammer and javelin....I am still not expenting those muscles fully....my technique work will only start in Jan. Now it is still a case of 4 days a week in the gym doing strenghtening work hoping that by January the muscles will be strong enough to hande the extra forces. My specialist reckons all structures are settled now and I can go ahead , but I have decided to first strengthen more...a mishap now will put me back too much..

Nic, I'm sorry to hear you have to care for your wife...but I'm glad in a selfish way too! My mum is my dad's main carer. He's in respite for about 6 weeks while she concentrates on herself, but he is in a wheelchair and that's been a concern for all of us.

Hi Paulus....I also started with the bike , but very quickly stopped that....it was not getting me anywhere...instead I used the step machine....it is a far better way of strengthening the gluteus maximus and gluteus medius....these muscles were seperated during the opp. and they are the most powerfull muscles in the body and are so important for the core to become strong....like a good foundation for other structures to perform best.Just try the step machine for a week and you will see a marked difference next time you go back on the bike...wishing you all of the best in your training efforts...

Yes Bunny ... it is'nt something that is foremost in my mind....it is just part of life for me...the " in sickness or in health " and the " till death us do part" are phrases you repeat at your wedding seremony without giving it much thought...it is just part of the wedding vouws....untill you are called upon to act on it...and then your sincerety gets questioned.... backing out never entered my mind and I am sure it is also the case with your mom......

Hi Nic,

Its so nice to hear that your THR has been successful.  I hope you continue to do well especially as your wife relies on you for support.

I wish you both the best of luck for the future smile

Thanks Nic..

It so happens I'm buying my daughter a step machine for Christmas,so I shall give it a go.

I was under the impression that the bike was better for the joints, being non weight bearing..

The weird thing is the hip doesn't hurt whilst using the bike,it's always the next day and when walking all the time.

Not looking forward to another op,but if it fixes it then it can't come soon enough.

cheers Paul.

That's great news. As long as the doctors order is followed you will fine. Also your body does let you know what to do and what not to do. We all listen to our body we'll be fine.

Keep up the good work. Exercise and your operated leg stretched. Get that flexibility going. When your glutes muscle is tight and strong you'll be fine. A good eye for your bone density fortify your bones with calcium taking care of your bones will assist in a long time healthy recovery.

my THA is guaranteed for 30 years.
