Soreness

Hi there hippies!!! I just had my second THR this time it was my left side. I just got home yesterday and today I have found that I am extremely swollen around my knee. Last time My leg or hip never got swollen.. I am worried about infection as I'm a worry wort! But there is no redness, Fever, no fluid leaking out.. I worked in surgery long enough to know what to look for but that doesn't make it any easier after your own surgery. I would like to hear about your swelling and what did you do to help it go down? Not able to take anti inflammatory due to blood thinners. I am also not able to put all of my weight on my leg. It feels like my incision is stretching even though I know it's not but it's the only way to describe the pain. Sharp, burning pain! Mostly my pain is located around the femur. Maybe it's due to manipulation? I suppose I'm looking for words of encouragement from my fellow hippies! 😘

Hi

I had bad swelling around my knee and thigh but nothing else and had a dvt and pe I used ice pack on my wound which helped with the stinging pain. Get some advice tomorrow if you are still worried best to be on the safe side.

Hi. I'm 10 days post op & had significant swelling to & below my knee. Scared me too. Elevation & ice worked for me & now I can see my kneecap again. I also had knee pain & bruising from manipulation during surgery (ugh). Hope that helps. If really concerned I would contact your surgeon just in case, or to put your mind at rest so you can heal. Best of luck to you.

I am waiting on my surgery so all I can offer is encouragement and sympathy for your pain.  I had a blood clot after my ankle surgery and it left my leg with discoloration and an ache that is off and on.  Not going away.  Also I am told if I get a second blood clot for whatever reason, for example after my up coming hip replacement, I will be on blood thinners forever.  I would urge you to contact your doctor if that pain and swelling continues or there is no relief from ice and elevation.  Get an ultrasound to be sure and to catch any clot early.   Take care and repeat this back to me in Oct when I get my hip done and I am crying into my ice cream bowl.  Be hopeful and remember you are early in your recovery. Also, you have many friends here.

Ice the area swollen for 20 minutes. Do leg and foot pumps as well as walking lift leg pumps and dangle from bed swing legs front and back. maintain your prescribed pain meds to help keep you movin.

I had same issue swollen foot leg I wore my hubbys shoes. Both  feet, swollen. Take anti inflamatories and keep movin & continue bed exercises as tolerated.

Also used air boot pump from amazon to help with swelling it's a massage to the calves and thigh .

I am 6 weeks out from revision and still toes go a bit numb. Keep walking each day will progress a bit more. Baby steps the first few weeks.

Hoping other hippies have more suggestions.

Hopexxx

I think you need to contact the clinicians.  I had swellings but no pain.  Finally went down with an additional blood pressure tablet. Wishing you the best.

It's a 3 day weekend here but I have a friend that runs an urgent care.. if it gets more swollen or turns red I will go and see him this weekend.

It's just crazy how each hip is different. Like my other hip did perfect but I had to have a revision on the second week due to the stem settling. After the revision I was stiff but never swollen, no bruising and no burning. This one is complete opposite!

I know what you are talkin bout. This is my third and each one is different with a whole different set of issues to cope with. I know it will take time as revision goes. 6 weeks later and 10 days in rehab still struggling. I know it takes time for revisions to heal and I'm in no hurry!

every day we grow stronger and it's baby steps until time gives us the ultimate healing experiences. No more pain and a better quality of life is our goal.

Hopexxx

Hi

you don't need to have fever nor leakage from your wound to have an infection as that's how it is with me. I am not saying you have an infection but it's advisable to have it checked. I am sure you doctor will do bloods especially if you are so worried and it's best to be on the safe side.

good luck

Hi,I came out of hospital Monday and by Tuesday lunchtime my operated leg above the compression stockings was very swollen. It felt difficult to bend at the knee.

After my initial worry of DVT we popped back to hospital to check it out and it is quite normal and can last a while.

This morning thank goodness it has reduced in size and feels a little more comfortable.

Thankfully when I woke up this morning my knee isn't so swollen. But I still have pain in my femur and a burning sensation on the side of my leg when I stand to walk. I will keep a close eye on it today.

I have exactly the same as you!

elevate ice,and rest, also I am using a super circulation machine that is helping.

I have the circulation machine too and I love it!!! I am doing elevation, ice and the circulation machine.. doing my exercises 3x per day. It's helping. I looked in the mirror and I am bruised in so many places!!

Hi there, I'm 11 days post op for right THR,from the onset my thigh and knee is heavily swollen and bruised.every night around 7 ish the whole leg swells, toe to top and is tight ache and painful, however in the morning that goes down, after resting in bed. I'm sorry to hear you are in great discomfort, I fully sympathise,I found ice didn't help but elevating in bed does.im on anticoagulants and ibrufen, ibuprofen is the only thing that seems to help.it dosnt sound like infection but keep an eye on your dressing for outside oozing, it feeling very sore and if you experience chills, fever etc.someone suggested putting a pillow underneath your knees in bed. I hope it all heals quickly for you.

Hi i came home today from lthr. It will be a week tomorrow since i had it done. Had to have a blood transfusion and the wound was oozing so they kept me in two more days. Generally very painful and very painful to put weight on it. Thigh and leg swollen esp from thigh to knee. Wound is still oozing. Didn't look too bad when i was discharged this morning but over the day it looks as bad as before won't make it to as even with someone holding my arms on each side it was excruciating getting up the 6 stairs in the house and getting in and out of the car. Still waiting to hear back from the hospital re a community nurse to look at it...at a $100 charge. Using ice on it. Feeling worried just like you ..
