HI Hippies
I am now 6 days post op and still can't believe I went ahead and had the surgery done. I was so terrified I nearly jumped off the table while they were getting me ready.
I was expecting to have a lot of pain in the hip/thigh area but apart from the soreness of the wound iself I find my knee on the operated side is painful and swollen, using ice packs and tens machine does help but am suprised to have a painful knee. Has anyone else found this?
Haha you sound just like me xx lol yes both my knees were swollen but now 3 weeks on they are fine :-) xx
Yes - I had this on and off for a few weeks and found if I did less then it helped my knee...I also am a fan of heat rather than ice to sooth pain as it lasts longer and is less harsh
It got better after about 4 weeks - but at times I thought I needed a replacement in my knee!
So give it time and rest
look at the hip op on utube, you will be surprised at what posistions they put your knee in lol, i have been lucky both times not had knee problems, but 2nd one did have brusing on calf,
I had that, my knee swelled up and i got a pain in the muscle just above my knee cap, has alot to do with the operation i was told and ice packs help, it goes and the swelling goes down once you get a bit more movement.
suexx
I think a lot of the knee pain is down to stretched ligaments - quad muscles.
Hi Toto, ,
welcome to this side - you made it through darling ...
Swelling of knee and leg etc. are normal as this body part has been so manipulated, twisted etc .being part of this whole procedure -
I had the same problems after 1st THR and ask surgeoin with 2nd one to please handle me with more care ---- and he did !!!! no bruises, little swelling and discom fort around knee -
Be gentle and kind to Toto - she just had major surgery
big warm hug

I didn't have any pain in my knees before surgery but they ached for weeks afterwards not to mention all the other odd aches and pains that I wasn't expecting. What you are experiencing sounds absolutely normal so don't worry about it , check with your physio I'm sure they will also reassure you. The good thing is that it does get better and you will be able to enjoy your new hip.
Best wishes for a good recovery.
Thank you fellow hippies for your advice. This is such a great place to visit when you are at home and recuperating. Anything you can think of that is bothering you someone else has been there before you and can offer reassurance. I am very grateful for this site.
Hi - yes I was surprised at the amount of pain and swelling I had on my knee, I was told it was normal for this type of procedure and I'm sure it only lasted 3-4 weeks, I'm now 6 weeks po and now and again still get a bit of knee pain when I do to much!
