I am almost 18 months out from THR (Anterior) and have to use crutches or cane. Been going to specialists since September 2016. No one has the answers. Hip surgeons blame it on back problems. Back surgeons say its a loose stem in hip. Can't sleep, won't take pain meds. Feels like someone is sticking a sharp knife into my thigh and pain in groin, as well. Have tried chiropractor, acupuntcure, muscle activation technique, physical therapy....no relief. One hip specialist says he would wait a full 24 months until they discuss revision surgery. Under 60 and did NOT think this was going to be the outcome. Have had bone scan, aspiration in joint, MRI's, xrays.....no answers and only getting more disabled and frustrated.
Hi Billy, poor you.I am in the same boat more or less,I am in pain with both hips & knees & my other was in March 2015.I am my Disabled Hubby s carer & never had proper aftercare.I had to struggle with caring for my Husband. I am very tense all the time, big time terrified of NHS hospitals.I had my op in the Nuffield hospital woking but under the NHS.Through choose & book.I have Reflexology every other week. When we go away to hotels for a mini break I make sure that that hotel has a spa that I can use.I hate the cold as this makes my muscles even worse.I try not to take painkillers.I also have natural crystals to help me.As for sleeping i have not slept properly for years There was an article in one of the papers saying the hospitals will only operate if really nessecary Sorry to be doom & gloom.regards Amanda h .
Sorry Billy. But I believe it may also be caused by the Stem. I had the same pain around the 2-3 month mark as I way over did the treadmill. Dr told me to stop for a while and after a few months went away and has never returned. I know it is no fun
Dear Billy
That is so disappointing and frustrating for you and really rather unacceptable.
If the pain was due to your back being out a decent chiropractor should have been able to make significant difference in one visit though additional consultations might have been necessary so I think you can cross that off the list. I take it that you did not have this or back pain
before your hip surgery.
I can only think from all that you have told us that as you have suggested your stem is loose.
Was yours a cemented hip or did you have to fake great care not to twist your leg for the first eight whilst the bone locked into the stem?
Cheers Richard
Billy
I am 8 months post posterior approach and told surgeon similarly like someone sticking a knife in groin. Sorted out painful thigh by £300 worth private massage to loosen knotted taut muscles . Told groin pain was from weak muscles trying to support leg. Sceptical but did the groin exercises such as squeezing ball between knees to cause resistance, sliding one bad leg on slippery floor with towel towards bent good leg. ... got to say it is very slowly working .. so look at WEAK MUSCLES?? All the best x
A loose stem could very well be causing your pain, and should be obvious to any good hip replacement surgeon by looking at an x-ray. I would go see an excellent hip revision specialist for his opinion. A loose stem is a very serious condition and should be replaced quickly, no matter when your original surgery was done. Leaving it alone can cause nasty damage to your bone, not to mention the pain you are suffering. It can and does happen that stems can become loose within the first year of a hip replacement. Go to a hip revision expert, is my recommendation.
Micro motion of the stem. The x-ray may look normal
Oh billy, I'm so sorry to hear of your nightmare situation! You must feel so discouraged! The only thing I can suggest is prayer to whoever is your higher power for strength to get through this. Know that you are in my prayers.
dear billy,
warm welcome to this hippies forum where we share our personal stories and experiences ...
I am so sorry to hear this -
as others already mentioned, sounds like a loosening stem ... but we are not medical professionals -
Were you told to take it easy until you reach the 24 months mark?
Please keep us posted -
big warm hug

Hi Billy
I am nearly 16 months post op from THR (posterior) and have just dislocated my hip bending to take dandelion heads off. Since I had my THR I have suffered with nerve damage to my foot. I have been to a private Physiotherapy and 2 different one have told me it's because of my back problem.
When I dislocated my hip my husband rang for the ambulance they took me to the A&E X-rayed it took me to theatre gave me a general anesthetic pulled it back in place. I now have a leg brace on and my foot feels shocking.
I have tried chiropractors, acupuncture, podiatry and private physiotherapist without relief. I have also been told 24 months but I am 70. I also get frustrated and seek some answers.
i hope you can get some satisfaction and will keep looking to see how you get on.
All the best
Brenda
