Hi - I am 69 & 10 months out from THR. The thigh pain started about 2 months ago. An appt with my surgeon was not available until next week. However, 10 days ago, my thigh started having excruciating pain to the point I was unable to put any weight on my leg. Went to the ER - had X-rays, ultrasound of my leg & a cat scan. Everything checked out fine. Even after 2 shots of morphine - still was unable to put weight on my leg. After the morphine kicked in - they would not let me leave until I was able to support myself with a walker. My niece took me home & I used the walker for a couple days & my leg was better but the thigh pain (tolerable) is still there. Any suggestions? Thank you.
Dear Sharon
Going on what you have said I would seriously be thinking that this could be back related. I've said this here several times but it is worth saying again, if one's back is out of true then it can cause pain in other areas of the body.
I would make an appointment to see a good chiropractor but not a McTimoney qualified one as they are trained in a more limited way. You should have a clearer idea of whether your problems are back related at the end of an inexpensive appointment and may even have the problem corrected at that first appointment.
It's worked for me in the past. Good luck
Richard
Pain in mid front of thigh? Could be stem related. Best of luck
Sorry to hear of your thigh pain Sharon. I had anterior THR 3 yrs ago and have been having thigh pain which recently is very painful especially if I bear most of my weight on operative leg. my operative leg is longer. Is yours? I find wearing a lift in my shoe makes the pain less severe. I went for a 2nd opinion last week by a different surgeon and he said pain could be due to the stem not being stable. I am going for a bone scan Monday to see if this is the case. Will update. Best of luck to you!
Sharon, sorry to hear about your thigh pain. There is another longer discussion about thigh pain on this site somewhere. Quite a few people experience mid-thigh pain. I'm 7 month post-op with a THR. What i have learned is that it takes awhile for the stem and femur to grow together and that micro-movement of the stem can cause mid-thigh pain. Also called end-of-stem pain. If i do too much like too much walking or riding a bike too long causes me pain until I back off and give it a few days rest. I read on a surgeons website that people can expect some pain 18-24 months following surgery. Not good news. From this site I read that heat and massage helps the thigh and some NSAIDs help as well. A good gin and tonic not bad either. My experience anyhow. You will get better.

Sharon,
Sorry to hear about your leg/thigh pain. Unfortunately, my opinion will just cloud the issue even more. Oft times the pain is being caused by pressure on the nerve in the L4/L5/S1 areas of the spine. At least that is what they tell me. So far I've had 2 spine surgeries in a 30 day window and still have the leg/hip pain at times so severe that I can't walk. Still working to cure the problem, will keep the group posted.
hi sharon,
warm welcome to the hippies forum where we share our personal experiences and stories -
The good thing is that all the tests show that everything is fine - but to get that kind of pain that you can not put weight is scary ...
do you remember if you did something out of the ordinary 2 months ago ? I am sure you wrecked your brains trying to remember, right ?
A great deal of the recovery takes place in the first two months, but complete return to normal takes longer. Bone around the metal parts keeps changing and remodeling for 1 to 2 years after surgery, which is why you can feel deep aches and pains some times and can even tell when the weather changes.
Please keep us updated on how you are getting on otherwise and how the outcome of your appointment with surgeon ...
big warm hug
