What IS the correct way to get oneself into the car like coming home from the hospital!? We have two sedans, one higher than the other which i assume is preferable. It makes me hurt to think of it.
Butt in first then lift operated leg in...I went home in a Focus, seat as far back as it will go. I think the lower car is better.
Recline the seat as far as possible and push it back as far as possible. Stand feet together , back to the car and lower yourself onto the seat (a cushion is useful). Legs together. Get someone to lift your legs whilst you lean backwards so you dont break the 90 degree rule. Swivel whilst legs are lifted. Just take it an inch at a time and make sure the person lifting your legs knows to stop if you say stop.
Yes. 1st time is horrible but it gets better and it does mean you are onvyour way home :-)
Take care

Hi Gail,
Agree with other responses, but simply adding a plastic bag under your bum makes it soooo easy to swivel round on the seat....
Good luck

I agree with everyone! The first time getting in is scary! I believe there are some videos about this on YouTube which might help you!
you don't want the car to be too high like a range rover. otherwise you should be ok, put a bag for life on the front seat as you can swivel easier, make sure the front seat is back as far as it will go and the back of the seat back as it makes it easier to get in, Keep your legs together as you sit on the seat as far back as you can so you can swivel round into the seat, its so easy to do.
hi Gail,
good tips given ...and watch the video on YouTube. ...
I think a car that is higher is better ..
take your time. ....
When is your surgery?
Big warm hug

We have a Toyota Prado, large 4 x 4, Oh fun and games the first time I had to get in after 1st THR, I'm not tall enough to put my bum directly on the seat. Worked out that a very small one step stool, (folding) available at hardware stores lifts me up just far enough off the ground, 2nd THR had the getting in and out of the car down pat, husband knew to bring to stool around to my door much to onlookers amusement, to then follow Kate (above) instructions. Thats exactly what I was taught in the hospital, and you must do the getting in and out of the car in your time, husband partner needs to be very patient until you master it. Plastic bag or seat swivel is useful, but hardly worth buying, can you borrow one.
All over the above. It can hurt a little but not too much and oh, the freedom! Also, have a pain killer 30 mins before you do it.
yes ... take your time !!! see:one wrong move-thread -
