i have been told that I will have to have blood thinning injections ( most likely Warfarin) each day, has anyone also had to have these?
I am on blood thinning tablets but a friend of mine had the injections and she was fine only side effect seems to be cold hands.
Yes. It is a common after surgery regime. I had injections for 21 days after my hip repair in April, which I had to do in my stomach each night. After my LTHR on the 13th if August I was given Rivoroxaban tablets to take for 35 days.
I much preferred the tablets to the injections.
Yes I had to do it for 6 weeks!!! I just coughed each time I did it....you just get some bruising on tum ...... I stacked boxes on kitchen work top so I could see them going down !!!!
Kept telling myself it's for my own good !!!
I fond I wasn't always consistent with the injections. If I didn't do it quite right I would end up with a small bruise around the injections site, like a little bulls eye.
Yes. Had to do them tor 28 days. Didn't hurt, just like a pin prick. Ended up with some lovely bruises on the stomach!
I have been told that a course of Apixaban tablets can be taken instead of the injections.
Has anyone had that experience?
2 tablets a day for 30 days.
Ask to have Aspirin tablets rather than the injections. I was given these instead o the daily injections following surgery.
Hi Elaine,
Yes, I think that I will ask for Asprin, as I have a needle phobia, from when I was a child & had intramuscular injection into my leg muscle. I must have moved slightly, which resulted in not being able to move my leg for 2 days. I also had a needle break in my arm, so really not happy with injections.
Hi there yes I am 9weeks post tlhr and I had to inject tum every day for 5 weeks @ 6pm showed me how to do once in hospital then I myself did them from then on just told myself had to be done
they are pre loaded injections and needle that
fine you don't feel a thing just don't think about
it ,I had a lovely row of different shade of bruise
across my tum, was so pleased with myself
every day when done .Good luck hugs xxx
I had aspirin as well. Ask your doctor why he/she specifically wants the Warfarin over other choices. I'm sure there's a reason but it never hurts to ask if there are other options. Good luck with ur surgery😀
Oh yes, many of us had to do the injections daily....not as bad as they sound....Barb
Hi Brindle - I was prescribed Lovenox injections (sub-cutaneous) for 6 weeks.
I did them myself -glad to see the end of them but it didn't really hurt. Don't be alarmed by bruising as it is naturally caused by the bloodthinning qualities.
Good luck.

I was given Xarelto a tablet, I had no problems with it.
Recommended to my GP by a vascular surgeon, as I am on Metrotrextrate of 35mg, and leflunomide 10mg, for severe arthritis, and also have stomach acidosis problem, very angry I was told, so aspirin not recommended either.
I deveoloped a blood clot in my lower leg 4 days before surgery, so was cancelled for 6 weeks, and was told because I was on this medication I was to be taken off the surgeons list completly, by booking clerk. GP not happy to hear that, nor was the surgeon, as he knew how serious my situation was.
When i was first given Xarelto it was not on the recommended list for the hospital I was in, and it caused an awful fuss that I had been given it, witholding before surgery, one Week, as per packet instruction, after my surgery I was surprised that I was given Xarelto, I'm pretty sure there was a letter from the vascular surgeon that my GP had helped to get on my file, and nurses saying you are the only patient on this medicine.
2nd THR again given Xarelto, as were other patients on the ward, and I also know that other patients on this forum have been given xarelto.
hi brindle,
joining the choir here - 6 weeks of fragmin injections post-op 1st and 2nd THR -
I asked for pills the 2nd time around but surgeon preferred injections -
not too bad on hindshight -
big warm hug

325 mg aspirin tablet daily for 3 weeks, my wife had same surgery with same surgeon and had the daily injection in stomach. I don't know why the difference, obviously prefer the pill !
Yes, after my surgery I had to give these to myself for a few days (14, I think -don't remember now). I thought I could take a pill (Coumadin), but instead, this is the method now. I was really scared to inject myself, but it ended up fine. The needle is very small, although when you inject yourself, it does sting for a moment. All you do is grab a fold in your tummy, and inject. Do not rub the area afterwards, as definite brushing will occur. Bruising will occur anyway, but very small spots. I hesitated each morning and hated giving myself the shot, but it's only for a short time, and you'll get through it. Take a deep breath. You will be fine!
I know you have to keep blood from clotting up to 6 weeks after operation. I had to inject as I was allergic to aspirin. Don't know about warfarin unless you have other symptoms/illnesses.
Hi Brindle -- I am the same as Franka (allergic to aspirin) so injections were prescribed for me to (lovenox brand which I injected each day for 6 weeks). It isn't bad but I WAS glad to finish with them..
Blood clots are a serious risk so better to be safe than sorry.
I got my 1st hip in Feb and I get my 2nd one tomorrow with same routine.
😊
Good luck with everything.
good luck
