Anyone suffering from AVN who got hip replacement? Please share your experiences
supprised at how many people suffer with avn i sufferd with it for a few year's before getting a proper diagnosis of avn and the damage to my hip was all ready done i had a trail left hip replacement at the age of 30 the recovery was quite a long time for me but i went from needing really strong pain kills pre op to a week after the operation not needing any painkillers apart from the odd naproxen and paracetamol. i had my doubts before the operation but if i was asked would i go through it all again 100% i would and any one hesitating about the operation get it done it so much easier after the op 😁
From 11/17 - 12/18 I saw orthopedic surgeons, a neurologist and a pain doctor. I am a very active 66 year old woman, I hike and walk miles with my 2 dogs and am not overweight. I had an MRI in 11/17 and it showed arthritis of the hip and spinal thrombosis. Another diagnosis was my sacroiliac joint. During one year, I had 4 spinal blocks and 3 cortisone shots to my hip. In April 2018, I met with one of the few ortho surgeons I had already seen and I was in extreme pain. He off-handedly noted that I had hip arthritis and when I asked for something to alleviate pain, he offered anti-inflammatories. I advised they were of no help and his response was "Well that's too bad, because I'm not going to give you anything stronger." Went back to my pain doctor and he gave me a script for pain meds. I had really wanted to try stem cell treatment and in 12/18 I went for another MRI and this time it revealed AVN. I was no longer even a candidate for stem cell and the pain worsened. I went back to Dr. "I'm not giving you anything for pain" because he studied under the surgeon who did my bilateral knee replacements in 2011. He is no longer at HSS. On December 26, 2018, I had RTHR, was in the hospital for 2 nights and my son convinced them to send me to rehab - Kessler. I am a widow and live alone with my 2 dogs. I was in Kessler for a week and on my second day at Kessler, I did a huge turn-around. I now walk almost 3 miles daily, (I walk my dogs separately), I no longer use the cane and only used the walker for 2 days. I have no problem sleeping - I was already a back sleeper. Many who have seen me are amazed and they now call me "Wonder Woman!" I do get groin pain, but when I rest it goes away. I'm a bit slower than I was, but after all, I'm only 4-1/2 weeks post-op. I have a follow-up on February 3rd. By the way, I also had Posterior Hip Replacement surgery. Feel free to ask any other questions that I have not covered!

Hi , CD I was diagnosed with AVN in both hips three years ago, in 2016 I had Total hip replacement of my right hip they used a cemented replacement, in less than 8 weeks, I knew something was not right, It took my surgeon a year to figure out that the cement was breaking down, and my hip was micro moving, which was what was causing all my pain., so almost a year after my first surgery, I was back having my right hip replaced again, this time with a fitted femur replacement. It feels much better, so this year AI will have my left hip done., By a different Doctor.
Hi there,
I was diagnosed last year with AVN of my left hip due to Steroid use for Crohn's Disease. The surgeon basically said there was no point in doing anything other than a THR. Had mine done mid October and now back at work and it's been fantastic. It still can get a little tender around the incision site now and again. Hopefully that will pass. Fingers crossed none of my other joints start with AVN. I'm 42 by the way.
I needed a new hip caused by long term steroids for an autoimmune disease too. My surgeon wanted me on zero steroids for the op, I negotiated 5mg in the end!
Heyy it's good that you are doing well. Good luck. Any specific restrictions you are told!
Oh! Good luck Any complications in revision surgery? What's your age?
