I am just one week and 1 day post op for thr and am walking around the house with no assistance from walker, crutches or cane. I do place a hand on a wall or counter to guarantee stability as well as hold railing to walk up and down the stairs to be able to minimize weight on operated leg.
I'm considering trying to go to the gym to use their stationary bike and treadmill in order to begin stretching the connective tissues in my leg and to begin rebuilding muscles that have atrophied since pain gradually kept me from exercising...about 2 years ago.
Has anyone else done this this early In their recovery? Any advice or warnings?
Hi Tricia...I know we all heal at different rates and some faster than others but in the end it takes a long time for a hip replacement to completely heal. One weeks is very, very early in the recovery process. It sounds like you are doing wonderful but I would run this idea past my surgeon first and get the ok from the docs....remember you are still at risk for dislocation and sometimes if you overdo it that can cause more damage than good. Wishing you well and a quick recover. Barb
Hi Tricia,
Sounds like you are having a very good recovery. Do you know if your surgery was anterior or posterior?
This has a bearing on the type of restrictions you would need to consider when going to gym.
I agree with Barbie. Ask you surgeon! Weights may be too much now. And certain movements may cause more harm. I hear you about wanting to get back to exercises! Talk to your surgeon first. Take it easy be kind to your body! Glad things are going well for you! God bless you! LD
There are so many good exercises you can do before you advance to using gym equipment and since dislocation is more prominent in the early months of recovery, I would err on the side of caution until you are more healed and stick to a basic exercise program. There are so many great exercises. You can google ideas on youtube for rehab excercises after hip replacement and run these by your surgeon or a therapist. Don't be overly anxious even though you feel good.
There are many safe ways to exercise without weights and you could get clumsy on a treadmill early on and walking outside will have the same benefit.
Thank you all for your encouragement and careful warnings about overdoing it. I'm trying to be patient, but am so eager to get back to normal that I probably need to be reminded that a dislocation from too early exercise or from a fall would seriously impede current progress. Just want to be normal and experience life without pain again!
Hi Tricia we all want to get back to normal
did you not read the post from fellow hippie
who dislocated doing something simple
like opening draw.Steady on there you will
do yourself more harm than good.
I myself are so happy even with the bad days
(which I guess you'll get)because I no longer walk like ape woman and all that pain has gone.
Good luck and hugs xxx
My physio said that some people become over enthusiastic in the first couple of weeks, when they should really be taking it easy and then they suffer later on if they are not careful.
No way could I have done that after my operation, or after my revision.
Do check with your physio / surgeon first.
and let the gym know your condition too.
Hi tricia
Glad to hear of your fast progress I'm now 5 weeks post and since week 3 iv been on exercise bike doing 4 miles morning and night remember to adjust seat high enough to not brake the 90 degree rule this has helped build the muscle and feel stronger by the day when I go for a long walk I still use one stick as when tired begin to limp keep up the good work
hi tricia, whoa ... girl, walk, don't run darling --- absolutely great that you feel so good and ready to go -- I also remember your post of feeling so fatigued - you really just had major invasive surgery and apparenlty suffered the last 2 years ... Even the furniture surfing that you are doing might not be conducive to healing properly - your body is still weak, not in balance - what has healed up till now is so fragile and you really don't want to jerk and yank it around - do you have physical therapy ? It is not easy, but please try to slow down and be gentle with yourself --- big warm hugrenee
