Hi, am at 7 weeks, had the sign off from the consultant and am walking stick free, doing exercises religiously but want to get back to gym equipment soon - any hints, tips, taboos anyone can share with me?
Also, when I asked the consultant if there were any restrictions, he said the only thing I don't want you to do is the breast stroke! so does this mean I can cross my legs now?
PT has given me exercises for a sacroiliac problem which includes a crossed leg!!!
Many thanks
Janine
Hi Jixipix
I was advised at my check up to do bike only at gym after 3 months could do everything except Rower and full squats. You dont say if yours was cemented or not. Mine was uncemented. No breast stroke legs for 3 months either. Saw doc at 9 months post op and he basically said the only restrictriction for life is not to cross leg over top of other knee and that I would never be able to full squat. Apart from that could do anything even run as long as I dont fall over. I said no I dont run i just do fast walks. My gym also had a glute machine. Basically you put your leg onto pad so bent at knee and then push back and forth. Best bit of equipment I used. Did wonders for stretching muscles and strenthening them
Be careful still at 7 weeks about crossing legs .. I am 3 weeks and due to my speedy recovery it's tempting to do too much but don't risk dislocation .. 3 months you should be fully healed on inside as well as out then can do more or else what u wish .. most fustrating thing is not bring able to drive when walking around no sticks or pain killers in system but asked and told 6 weeks even for left hip so guess another 3 weeks to go .. good luck F
Hi, thanks for the info, really useful. I think I will stick to the exercise regime my PT has given me as it's quite extensive until I'm past 12 weeks.
It is tempting to do too much as I feel so "normal"!!! driving after the 6 weeks was a joy, be patient it's well worth it!!!
Thanks again
Janine
Will take up to two years for the muscles to heal though Fiona x
Thanks also got good physio pre op and post op exercises have definatley given fast recovery .. know what u mean Re driving as I feel very normal also but have to rely on friends for lifts . Hope ur good recovery continues.
Hi im nearly 5 weeks post of tlhr I'm 40 years old and always been in gym my pt gave me the green light to start on exercise bike 10 days ago and it's strengthening my leg by the day I'm doing 4 miles twice a day on exercise bike and walking around 2 -3 miles daily staying on 1 stick tho till my follow up appointment I would recommend the bike but make sure seat high enough so you don't brake the 90 degree rule good luck and keep up the good work
great new Janine! Good for you, my Doctor is pretty funny says my real restriction is " don't fall" I asked what about bending?" he sid it won't hurt you"..... hmmm well I can't bend to the floor and I am listening to my body and PT, thy are much more cuatious. I think a lot of restrictions are eased up after 6 weeks. I am 2 week post op this passed Wed. He says he performs the surgery in a way that we are not that restricitive. All I know is he has done thousands with no dislocations, so he must be doing something right. Well wishing you continued good luck!!!
hey janine,
it seems that there is no one size fits all here - so many different answers to these questions depending on surgeon and PT -
I had 2 different PT's and they each had a different approach - one said,to walk unaided as soon as possible, the other had me with walker and cane until at least 6 weeks post-op -
so it all depends ... 7 weeks is still a bit early, imho, to use gym equipment without supervision - it is easy to do the exercise incorrectly - tissue and muscles etc are still fragile and putting them under repetiitve stress might undo the work already done - ... but honestly, I don't know ...
somethingelse I want to say is that men seem to heal faster and differently than women --
what does your PT tell you?
good job so far !!!!!
big warm hug
