Not sure whether I am doing too much or maybe I am getting soft, Went for a 4 km walk today and was hurting in the calves and knees during the walk but then again I walked about the same yesterday. Anyone I meet who have experience say I am going well but not to over do it. Also I really need to get back to work with Xmas coming I need the wage coming in.Am I being too optimistic and I am relatively pain free at least towards the way I was pre op. I have been reading the forum for 2 months now but decided to take part for some badly needed advice.
Think you are over doing it, you need to rest most of us by 10 we can only do 1 mile, best thing is to ask physio if you are doing too much also are you using a stick or crutches when out walking
hi Andolino
I found walking really trounced my knees initially - it felt wrong. What was wrong was how much I was trying to do. Once I cranked this back the knee pain was lower and less sustained and I built up from there
So "gan canny hinny" - which translated means go careful!

I am ten weeks and have just had a similar conversation with a friend... I feel so well and now I am allowed to drive I feel that some days I just forget what my body has gone through and so by evening I feel exhausted! Trying to take my own advice to others and slow down an it!
Hi Andolino,
I too am almost 10 weeks out. I walk about a mile a day and sometimes take my cane if the terrain is rough or hilly. Remember that the anterior approach to hip replacement is more involved. Your muscles have been through a lot of trauma. I would shorten your walks for now and then increase in small increments.
Good luck!
My previous reply contained an error. Anterior approach is NOT as invasive as posterior. Sorry for the mix up. Either way try not to over do it.
Yes i agree with the others, you have overdone it, do you also have arthritis in you knees, I wouldn't be surprised. You do need to slow down a little. 2 km's of quality walking, standing straight, heel down first, you really have to force yourself to walk correctly for a start. If like me you had severe arthritis of the hip joint you adjusted your style of walking over many years to try and keep going, now you have to get back to correct walking, in good firm shoes. There are videos on correct walking post THR on the internet, try to find the hospital based ones.
hi andolino,
welcome to this forum and your decision to participate -
It sounds as if you are overdoing it or, as mentioned, not walking properly - very easy to do -
maybe you can cut down on the distance and see if it brings some relief to your knees and other muscles -
What kind of job do you have?
Good to hear that you are relatively pain free though ... so take it slower - be gentle with your self and know that you are really doing great !!!!!

Hi Riley, I made a mistake in the subject line ihad a Posterior not the Anterior was a little frustrated when writing (not sure how to rectify this).
I will take your advice and thank you for the reply
Marilyn, thanks for the reply, I do use a crutch when out walking, probably my problem is no patience ha
Thank you Christine (Flower of Scotland i am thinking).
Jane Thank you for the reply, I promised myself that I would never forget how I felt pre op, and maybe I am not following on tha.t I am so much better now than I was then, and to be honest, I had some other issues too so they have not gone away.
Lyn, thank you and you are correct I do have trouble with both knees but I was always able to manage and knew how to deal with it. But as you say I probably was so engrossed in the Hip that the knee pain seemed irrelevant, Anyway I know I am lucky now to be over the hip trauma and need to get back to normal.
Renee, thanks for the reply, my work would be classed as physical but I never found it tough and a friend of mine who has a similar job was out for 5 months when I asked him why he said you will know yourself when it is time, I am beginning to realise now what he meant. This time 18 months ago I was very involved in crossfit and really enjoyed the intensity of training (not that I was really all that fit but I felt so good) now I am struggling to walk but as my wife says be happy with where you are now towards 12 weeks ago.
Try two 20 minute walks instead or two30
minute walks am and pm.
have a rest lying down flat at sometime
in the day. If your wife is happy with
your progress you are probably pushing
too hard.
good luck Cathie
Ha ha good one
dearest andolino,
I know that is hard ... please try to stop comparing your self to yourself 18 months ago ... 18 months ago I was a mess and got worse - so I have to go further, years, when I was exercising, hiking, walking, playing tennis etc and now ????? I can barely do 10 minutes on stationary bike - one freaking minute on the crosstrainer leaves me exhausted !!!
but I can walk for 20 minutes ... twice a day ... will increase it -
my mantra right now : Make peace with where you are !!!
Seems that you have a big supporter right by your side, darling !!!
give her a big warm hug

Andolino - Do you have a swimming pool, heated anywhere near where you live, I'm lucky I have one about a mile from wher I live. Get in do your post surgery exercises, your standing ones, then just spend and hour or so treading water. Thats what I have been doing three times a week, I have less pain in my back, and I know I;m getting stronger. I use a noodle, or water log to help keep me a little more buoyant. I mix up my treading water as fast as I can go, with just very relaxed paddling around, and then back to a burst of energetic work. The non-weight bearing exercises are what a physio reccomended to me. For new hip THR, you do have to be completly healed over, otherwise the chance of infection, not good.
Try walking on smooth level ground. Slopes and hills
put pressure on knees.
