Can you replace a hip replacement?

My father has just been admitted to hospital because his current hip replacement (14-15 years old) has just given way. What is the process of replacing/rebuilding the hip at this point? Am very concerned it will further restrict his mobility as he has very severe arthritis.

I'M having so much trouble with my first one I really can't give you any good information. My one leg is 1 lnch shorter now which is a real pain walking !

so is mine. The Dr. warned me but I didn't really that it was possible.  I'm going to put Dr. Scholl's heel pads in my shoe to act as a lift.

When I had both my hips replaced I was told to expect them to last approximately 15 years then they would possibly have to be replaced.  My understand is that they do not rebuild the hip but replace.  I am sure if you look on Google you will find more information on this matter.  Best wishes to your father and I hope he has a speedy recovery.

It very much depends on the structure and strength of the remaining bone but they will do a procedure which is called Hip Revision - google it for more info.

I'm on my third hip (left side) so there is hope after the first :0)

Yes, Jimmy,

It is called Hip Revision.  They don't last as long as the original hip replacement does, but I keep telling myself that medical advances will make sure that hip revisions get better and better as time goes on as I'm 38 and had my first one 2 years ago.  Good luck to your father.

Yes. If the bone is good you might even get a 3rd. They take out the prosthesis which damages the bone a bit so you lose some thickness then put in a new one.  It takes longer and is more difficult because of the scarring from the first go but it is quite common these days.  Statistically the second doesn't last as long but I know several people who had poor results from no1 and very good results from no2.  I have a friend who is doing well on number 3!!

I think they call that 'revision'.  I would think 14-15 years on one hip replacement is good, it is ABOUT the length of time the implant will last.  Some may go up to 20-25 years, it just depends on the individual's condition pre and during that time.   My understanding is that revisions are pretty common - lots of people go thru this..he will do fine, cheer up...
