Fish oil supplements

Hi All,

since being diagnosed with PMR in 2015, I've been taking one cod liver oil capsule daily. Since March this year when I changed the brand of supplement, by 'poo' has become very soft and I go more often!! I know it's a sensitive subject, but has anyone else has this sort of side effect from fish oil supplements???

Andrea 😳

I have that problem with magnesium.

I've never taken fish-oil supplements so can't help I'm afraid!

Magnesium salts are well-known as laxatives! They attract water into the gut as well as relaxing the muscles in the gut wall.  Grandma's generation kept Epsom Salts in the cupboard for exactly that reason!

I have been taking omega 3 for several years and have not noticed any difference in my bowels. But I'm not surprised that it has that effect on you. It is after all an oil which is going to be in your BM making it soft. I recently changed brands myself and mine says it absorbs better and quicker then the average omega 3. Maybe you're new brand is like that.

andrea93419, I have not, but with supplements being unregulated it is hard to tell what you are buying. I would try going back to old brand and see if there is a change. Good luck 🙂

Hi Andrea. I've been taking them for a while & have noticed a difference in bowel habits, I'm hoping it's a good change 😊

If you google fish oil supplements laxative effect  you will find various comments - inclusing combining fish oils and a high fibre diet for regularity!! wink

Thanks All, I think I'll go back to my original brand and see what happens! I've googled too Eileen and there seems to be a connection with fish oil and 'regularity' 😆 But I didn't seem to be affected by the old brand! I've just bought turmeric in oil form, so goodness know what that'll do to me as well! 😳

andrea93419, have you checked the source of your supplements out, I am trying to develop a list of brands to buy, but it very time consuming and difficult. At some point I hope to have one, but I am a long way from anything.

Just continuing down the road with a smile on my face. 🙂

Oh, Eileen, that takes me back ....Epsom Salts in the cupboard and was the other one liquid paraffin or have I completely lost it?

I've taken them for years and changed the brand but not paid attention to the effect. I loved cod liver oil as a child. I know....an unusual child.

Possibly not - I don't know, my mother wasn't that evil lol

I loved it. My mother had worked in what was at that time known as the welfare department. Possibly felt she had to set an example. 😇

Interesting Michdonn, I've just checked the ingredients in the 2 brands and my original seven seas does not contain Vit A, but the healthspan brand I'm taking now does contain it!! I've previously read that too much Vit A can be toxic, so I'll go back to the seven seas and see what happens!

Hi Andrea - constipation was a major problem. Was told to eat lots of fibre and eat fruits like kiwifruit - my favourite is the sweeter kiwifruit gold. For breakfast I have oats with fruits and nuts. It worked a treat. More palatable than fish oils: takes me back to the days in boarding school where 'punishment' (for swearing) was a spoonful of cod liver oil. Uuugh! (I was drowing in it!) razz

My posting to you Michdonn is waiting to be moderated, probably because I've named the 2 different brands of fish oils!! 🙄

Anyway one contains Vit A and the other one doesn't! Mmmm??

too much Vit A can be toxic, so I'll go back to the one without it!

Thanks andrea93419, if your message does not come through you can resend with characters or private. Thanks 🙂

I did exactly the same and discovered my new one contains vitamin A so I'm taking it twice a week now until I can get a new one without the added vitamin. Thank you for the warning, Michdonn.

I hope that is the answer andrea93419, it is very

difficult, to see the differences in 2 brands sometime and the smallest difference can make one brand course a problem.

Good luck on your journey with a smile on your face. 🙂
