Long Haul Flight

I hope some of you can help with tips and suggestions. I'm due to go to Rio in March - not to the Olympics, in case you wondered. It will be eleven months after my THR operation and I'm reasonably mobile now, but use a stick when I go out and find I can't stand for any length of time eg in a queue.

I've read here about people going to Florida and similar places quite soon after their operation - or so it seemed. Any advice gratefully received.

Many thanks

Mary

I havent had my op but i have been to Florida. Although i cant stand for long periods of time i did find it helpful to walk the isles frequently to prevent pins and needles and stiffness. Maybe worth paying for extra leg room so your not cramped. Its not much extra but it is helpful. Other than that thats all i can suggest

Hi, i did a long haul flight of 13hrs 9weeks after my THR. My surgeon was ok with this as long as u wear circulation socks/ tights. Socks didnt work for me and caused knee issues. I then did another 6 hr flight 5 months post op and wore skins which essentially are circulation leggings cyclists wear or sports people. They really do work. On the plane or if u drive its essential to drink lots to keep blood thin and energy up. Also frequent short walks and heel toe flex to work calf muscles which action pumps blood. All the best.

Thanks for your reply. I intend to wear the white socks was given in hospital - TED socks? Very difficult to get on but very useful to prevent swelling and DVT. Might suggest circulation leggings for my husband.

All the best.

How about taking an aspirin a day the week b4 as well as the socks. I would suggest getting a "three finger" sock putter onner they make putting on socks a doddle.

I was given a TED putter onner - a small very slippery plastic bag which you put on your foot, the TEDS slide over the heel very easily with it, and you just pull it out of the 'toe hole' in the TEDs to get it out again.

Hi Mary. I flew to Mauritius 7 weeks after my hip op (op was cancelled for a month and the trip was planned to be 3 months after op!!). Th consultant was ok about it as long as I wore the ted stockings during all travel (driving to and from the airport etc) also asked me to take 75mg aspirin two days before both flights. He advised no alcohol and to drink

Plenty of water. All went well and I needed the holiday! Good luck and I am sure you will be fine x

hi mary,

How are you doing otherwise ?  Take out a cancellation - and travel insurance, and read the policy ... one never knows ...

I think you'd be fine -

do you see your surgein before you leave?

big warm hug
