Long Haul Flight

I want to do a flight from the uk to san francisco in June when I will be 6 months post THR with bone grafts and extra metal etc. I am reading about increased risks of DVT. Has anyone else been in the situation please?

Thankyou xx

Could you not wear compression stockings? I believe it is advisable for anyone flying long haul who has had major surgery.

thankyou for this. apparently the DVT risk is much higher. i will research about the compression stockings and ask my surgeon. thanks again

Hi Carol, I have Hughes Syndrome which makes me higher risk for blood clots/strokes etc and I have to inject myself with Heparin on any flight longer than 4 hours, have a chat with your GPS who will prescribe it if needed.

Thanks Ann, thats good advice, i will contact my gp. best wishes to you xx

No problem, enjoy San Francisco and take it easy.Xx

I wanted to travel after hip replacement and my travel insurance company would not insure me until over 12 months.  It is high risk but perhaps speak to doctor prior to flight.

Thankyou Maree. I havent started to look into insurance yet so that's a consideration too. If doctor advises against it then I won't go, disappointment is better than health risk.

Best wishes and thanks again xx

Best of luck to you! I would recommend the compression stockings and also following your physician's recommendations. Please let me know your plans for San Francisco, it would be great to meet a fellow hipster from the forum!

Thanks Kristen, because of the insurance situation we have put the trip on hold for a little while but we do plan to go. Always been my dream to go to the Golden Gate Bridge! xxx

Hi

I have had a previous dvt,so I'm always careful with flights, due to your operation, definitely wear compression stockings. I always take a quarter or half an aspirin a week before flying, during the holiday and a week after but obviously this can be something to discuss with your doctor. Most consultants seem to say 6 months is fine post op for a long haul flight. I managed to get insurance specifically for my hip surgery at 8 weeks (only a short flight) but I'm covered for a year now.

Good luck with it

Regards

Nicky

hi carole,

Better safe than sorry, darling ... So sorry that you have to postpone your trip to this beautiful city and I am pretty sure that you will be able to enjoy it more when you are stronger ... It is a city with hills and might want to go for walks when there -- that might be still challenging 6 months post-op ....

ho wa re you doing otherwise?

big warm hug

renee

Hi Renee!

Totally agree, better safe than sorry. Was to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary but we will celebrate our 31st next year instead! Cornwall is always beautiful so thats the plan now!

Im doing really well, feel amazing in myself and pain free. Ive had problems since birth and had quite a limp pre op so, unfortunately, now my muscles dont want to play ball. I was also 6 weeks partial weight bearing post op. Bit worried that I might never walk without the stick and wil almost certainly have a limp. Can cope with the limp but really hope, if i work hard enough, my muscles will be strong enough for me to give up the stick. Anyway, as I said, happy and pain free which is amazing!

What a great site this is! I hope youre well and enjoying life?

Love Carol xxx
