Looking forward to being a double hippie

Hi I had my left hip replaced in Feb and I am due to get my second done on the 9th Jan. A question I have when I was sleeping on my back before I used to get very sore heels gas anyone else had that problem I tried moving my feet and getting g my husband to put cream on them but even with the horrible teds stocking they still hurt and had a burning sensation.

Hi Jill,

I had both hips replaced 24th October. Laying on my back with the worse part of my recovery, and I did start to get bed sores on my heels (district nurse confirmed).

Put a pillow or two under your calves so that your feet dangle off the end of the pillow.

All the very best for your op.

When I was in hospital and had a sore heel one of the nurses got an inflatable plastic sort of foot sock for me. Could you perhaps ask the hospital for one or do you have any of that inflated plastic packing used in boxes ?

Hi Jill so you're a day in front of me I'll be following your progress and wish you all the best , try a rolled up towel under your lower leg to raise heels off bed , hope this helps

Happy healing !

Best thing out is a piece of real sheepskin, don't ask me why but it stops bedsores and chaffing

Oh yes!! It was terrible!! They gave me a heel cover to wear. It's like a egg crate foam that cradles your heel. Also placing a pillow under your calves so your heels dangle. I used to also just dangle my foot over the bed some. Anything to keep pressure off heel. Hope you feel better soon.

Look on the internet for 'sheepskin heel cups'. I got some and well worth it as they really work.

The heel thing was such a nuisance and someone told me about the heel cups and thank goodness they did.

Hope your op goes well.

Hi Jill. Yes i can absolutely sympathise & identify with heel problems!

Im at 8 weeks post op now & have suffered with sore feet all through. I kept thinking it was such a minor niggle nothing serious so not worth mentioning to anyone but boy- it hurts!!

Ive got a cracked heel on non-op side ehich causes more pain & awkward walking than the new hip does. My op side foot was also badly manhandled during the op, extremely sore immediately after & finger shaped bruising came out, presumably due to pulling my leg to dislocate?

Im Smothering both feet in creams & have always elevated on a pillow under calf at night. Im missing a good soak in the bath too, all these showers drying my feet out even more but daren't have a bath till seen surgeon at 12 weeks.

Give yourself plenty of TLC Jill! 💕

I agree with all the advice. I had the same problem after my first hip replacement and even after a year, my heel is still very tender.

Get a heel cover from the pharmacy and if necessary hold it on at night with a sock. Elevate your heels off the bed with a rolled up towel or cushion under your calves. Keep your heels moisturised

It takes time, but persevere and it will get better.

I had the same problem still do. I only sleep on my back. Both hips are replaced.

i sleep with a pillow under both lega just hig enough to keep my heels from touching anything.

the pillow I have uses is long enough to run the length of my legs no pressure and comfortable. Also a side pillow for the non surgical leg to bend knee and rest on as alternative to release pressure on back and hips.

Also a bed that lifts top and bottom helps with reducing pressure on hips back and shoulders.

Another ER alternative could be a recliner different positions are available to tedipuce pressure on joints and heels can be over the edge. Many use that approach too.

I hope you fopine pine something that works for you. Even a small pillow or towel under the calves can help reduce THR pressure on heels.

Vaseline and clear wrap with socks can help heels heel much faster. It called occlusion.

great idea! Thanks.
