Sore heels

I had my operation 22nd June coping well doing the exercises but my heels are so painful from having to lay on my back that I can't sleep any suggestions

Well done, you're on the up now! The heels are a nightmare I agree. Can you try things like putting a pillow under your ankles to raise the feet? During the day, if you put your feet up, keep your heels away from resting on anything. You wil get lots of comments Im sure, because this is very difficult, especially because of the support socks. Good luck and best wishes for your recovery xxx

Thank you I am not wearing the stockings as I live alone and it would be impossible for me to change them.

I am managing everything else reasonably well prepared myself and my house before the op. This forum has been a blessing .

I have not had these yet LOl something else to look forward too. try one of those foot spa's, I bought a knee pillow off the internet they do work, you will only get 15-20 min on your side to start with but it is great relief.

Dear Ann

Although not easy I found it perfectly possible to get the stretch stockings on by myself using a basic sock aid and did so for many weeks.

Cheers Richard

Richard

You're cleverer than me then. Or maybe my size 11 feet are a problem. I can just get some of my ordinary socks on but I can't get the support socks anywhere near my heel.

Mike

Dear Michael

I wonder if you have the right size stretch stockings?

Good luck

Cheers

Richard

I managed to get some gel heel cups from the hospital which helped me and got this sorted before being discharged so had them ready to take home. Really useful in helping me to sleep.

Slipper socks help. Also great when you need to get up to go to the loo in the night. If you get anyone visiting, get them to rub some moisturiser into your feet. Makes a big difference. First thing I did after6Weeks of stockings was to get my friend to do a pedicure. It was bliss.

I had my operation on the 23rd. The first few nights out of the hospital my hands would get tingly and fall asleep and my heels were killing me!  My PT suggested a regular pillow under my legs to keep pressure off my heels and it worked like magic!  I learned to keep my hands at my side and that went away too. I'm amazed how well I am able to sleep on my back. Even 9 mo the pregnant I could keep off my stomach and side. I think the trick is the nighttime oxy 😜

Richard

Possibly not but it's hard finding socks that still fit after a few washes. I'll see what they give me on the 19th when, all being well, I finally get my replacement hip.

Mike

Dear Michael

I came out of hospital with two pairs so one gets washed and the other worn so both pairs have been hand washed every other day for several weeks now. I do not notice any increased difficulty in getting them on but perhaps as the elastic gets more use it gets easier.

Cheers Richard

Hi Ann

You can buy little sheepskin lined bootees from the internet for about £10. They are sold specifically for heel pressure sores and fasten with velcro so you can slide your feet in and out without bending too much. I had an old blister on one heel which flared up and was agony when lying on my back after my THR and these  bootees really helped me. A little sheepskin mat might even do the trick, just rest your heels on the furry side.

Hope you feel better soon,

sjhips

Ann, you need a sheepskin rug or something very soft under your heels at night or you will get bedsores. This is exactly what I had, and you find instance relief with sheepskin. You are spending lots of time lying down, if you can try and sit in a chair to get the air to your heels and away from the bed.

Good luck

Dear Rose

Good idea. I had five weeks of being on my bed and was concerned about bed sores and made a point of constantly moving my position. I also tried to reduce the pressure on my heels by putting a pillow under my legs which helped. I suffered from dry skin on my legs, advised E45 which helped.

Cheers Richard

Thanks rose actually have some little sheep skin booties will try them have made a point of little and often movement as per my surgeons instructions

Thank you for all your tips will try. Another query how far are you all managing to walk

Hi Ann

My mother, now 90 has had 2 hips and 2 replacements over the years.  She was advised by a nurse some years ago that red, pressure sore heels could be helped by getting a faux sheepskin pet blanket.  I was surprised, but duly went to a pet shop and found such a thing.  She cut it down to size and has since successfully used it.  I had my replacement 21st April and quickly developed sore heels.  I found the piece of blanket worked for me.  Similar to the sheepskin bootees that have been mentioned I guess.

Take care - hope you have friends popping in to see you as you say you are on your own.  Best wishes for a quick recovery.
