Left hip sugery in January 2105. Femur cracked and wired during surgery. Still having pain with every step - not quite limping, but having to take the first few steps very carefully.
Been back to surgeon three times. Replacement is okay. Did physio for weeks, was limping badly before physio.
How long is this pain likely to last? Can it be conneceted to the cracked femur and the wire?
Hi Anne
Welcome to the forum
I have no idea on your issue. But when you went back did your surgeon do
x rays / scans or anything to check all was ok ?
If not either get back to your surgeon and demand that he gets to the bottom of your pain or ask your GP to send you for x rays and a scan to be sure everything is ok. You could also ask for a second opinion hospitals usually have more than one orthopedic surgeon so see who else is one at your hospital and phone there secretary saying you would like a second opinion.. You can't carry on in pain. If no one will sort you out contact your local health board and tell them your having problerms and they wont treat you.
Hi anne,
We share a name (I am shirley anne) but also an experience.
My femur also cracked during THR because of a broken screw from previous op which had to be chiseled out. Anyway, the surgeon was great and used bone grafted from pelvis and wire to hold the new hip in the shaft of the femur.
So far I have not experienced much pain compared to the agony pre-op.
A ll I get now is this awful tiredness of the leg if I walk/stand for more than about ten/fifteen minutes.
I am five weeks post op today.
I still feel quite unsure of myself and do not like crossing the road etc.
Have you had an up-to-date xray?
I only ask because I think they sometimes take shortcuts and don't xray when they really should do.
If you are in so much pain I think you should go back to the surgeon and ask for an investigation of the cause. He can't really refuse because his reputation depends on good successful results.
Hugs by the way
Thanks, Shirley Anne!
You certainly went through the wringer with your THR!
I had a third x-ray last week. Surgeon says that the hip is secure and fine and that it's a soft tissue issue. (Poetry?!) He didn't seem interested beyond that.
It's not huge pain, it's just that every step hurts and i was hoping to be able to walk freely by now.
At the three month stage I seriously overdid things , was worried that I'd damaged the hip, but it's okay, thank goodness.
Hugs back.
Dear Anne,
I am so sorry to hear this - I know what you mean though - I am not as far as you are, (6 months post-op 1st THR and 6 weeks post-op 2nd THR) and the muscle pain is sometimes breath taking - around my knees, shins, thighs and feeling as if I am wearing an iron girdle ... both legs seem to be equally weak or strong or whatever the case -
I think that this is normal and can be expected - I watched the video on youtube again and oh dear, serious trauma there -
in your case it seems that there is a bit more that needs healing -
soooooooooo, we still need to be patient and kind and gentle to our selves -
all is well -
big warm hug
