hip replacement 12/29. came home 12/31. doing great as far as the hip goes but I am so nauseaus I can't stand it. the precript for this is not helping at all. does anyone have suggestions for controlling the nausea?
What painkillers are you on Janie? I discovered last year that I could not take cocodamol without being nauseous or actually being sick. Possibly a change of your painkillers might help.
Hi Janie
Sounds to me like you need different meds. Maybe a phone consultation or a trip to your GP may be needed
I was only nauseous in the hospital, but they gave me good meds for it. Call your doctor!
I am sensitive to meds so only took oxycodone and tylenol. I took gravol for the sickness. Hope it gets better for you.
Temporary fix, some ginger beer, sip very slolwy, may help.
Longer term fix, change the painkillers.
Morphine based painkillers make me sick as a dog, they changed mine to Fentanol, which seems to work for me with my last THR.
Another medication is Maxalon, that stops the nausea dead in its tracks even for me on morphine, but they tell me now they don't use it.
Why not if it works was my question, too old fashioned, or so I am told.
I just shake my head in amazement, that something that works, why toss it out.
It's the pain killers. Same happened to me. I had to stop meds. The nausea was worse than the pain. I'd advise you to do the same. Good luck
I feel for you Janie - I had this too, nausea and severe vomiting. It is awful combined with the pain of the operation.
It is almost certainly the painkillers which need adjusting straight away to try and help. However I have to tell you I stopped all pain relief and still felt sick. It was caused by very blood pressure due to blood loss in the operation.
You definitely need to see a doctor to find out. For your sake I hope it is the painkillers.
Lay down in a dark room, keep the windows open, sip apple juice regularly and you need to also be sipping drinks that replace salt and sugar ( can't name it because if moderator) and try and sleep it off. It will wear off, you will feel better soon - big hugs and hope the dr can help you
Try pills for sea sickness
how long afte you stop the meds did you notice a difference? i stopped the oxy last night hoping to wake up feeling less nauseas but I didn't. the fentenol doesn't help the nausea ...but gives me headache. the pain in the hip is nothing compared to this nausea. i woud have called the dr office already but i was released over the week end. will call them in the morning
Probably a full 2 days after I stopped the pain killers. Be patient. If you stop the painkillers, the nausea will definitely pass. Good luck and let me know how you are
I hope you are right. I havn't taken any prescription pain med since Saturday night. Just using tylenol right now. I can bear the pain in my hip but this nausea is more than I can handle. I called last night and they changed my anti nausea med to phenergan but I can't tell any differece.
I am one week post op today and still fighting this terrible nausea. Called and they changed me from ondanstron to phenergan...no change. called back and they said take 2 of the phenergan instead of one...still no change. i don't know what else to do. am miserable with this nauseated feeling all the time. i am not even taking pain med right now and my hip is fine. just can't get past this nausea.
Janie,
Just googled those meds, and they are both supposed to prevent nausea ...... if you are not on pain meds now, why do you need either of them?
Hope it clears up soon - I know how it feels on meds that your body does not like.
Graham - 🚀💃
i quit the pain meds because i thought they were causing the nausea, and kept taking the anti nausea stuff to try to ease the nausea. i think it might be an after effect of the anesthia that just has to wear off. i only know it's misery to deal with.
Janie it could be your blood thinners? Or low blood pressure? I had the same. As did a few other members. It will go. For me it was one of the worst aspects by far. Are you dizzy as well? Headaches? So sorry for you, it is wretched, but any day it will ease... for me it was day 9/10...
Ps none of the anti sickness meds worked me - or the injections - nothing - maybe stop them if they are not working. Big hugs
thank you for letting me know i am not the only one! was beginning to think something else going on. i haven't taken any pain meds at all today but i did take an ondonestron hoping against hope that it would help the nausea.
Phenergan is an antihistamine, will help if you are reacting to something else, but it does make you very sleepy.
I am really really allergic to horse flies and try to stay away from the beasties, but if and when I do get bitten, I take 25mg of Phenergan straight away, even then the last time still had to go to the hospital, a few hours later as reaction bad.
Dr said he was glad I had taken phenergan, if reaction that bad with it what would my reaction be without it.
Be interesting to see what happens next time I get bitten, and a little scary..
How are you today? Is it any better?
thanks for asking... yes, praise be, am finally getting some relief. I stopped all meds. i read somewhere about replacing sodium and i felt the need for salt. i drank some tomatoe juice with added salt and my daughter brought me some Ensure. today is a tremendous difference. i was really feeling hopeless for awhile. today, i feel like i'm coming back to life.
