Physio

Hi hippies

I am 4 weeks post op and I haven't got my first physio appointment until the 29th November. Is this the normal time to wait or should I call a help line number I have to ask?

I'm in London, and my first, and only physio appointment was at 6 weeks. ( I did have the sheet of exercises to do at home that I was given in hospital.) Good luck!

I had in house PT then went to PT 3 times a week Dr said as soon as I could get there the better. Seems long to wait take care

Hi Julie. They gave me an exercise sheet prior to my op. Then I saw Physio 3 weeks later. She didn't do much except change my crutches for sticks and told me to carry on with exercises.

Then made the next appointment for nearly 5 weeks later which is two days time after I see consultant. I'm in UK but they seem to get a lot more physiology in the US. Maybe because it's private ?

It has seemed to me that you are left with a lot of the healing process by yourself. There is nobody to ask if you have any worries.

So thank God for here Julie. So no not unusual from my experience. Xx

Hi Julie

No that is too long. I am now six weeks post op and as I reside on my own, I was unable to attend the hospital physio appointment which was two weeks post op. I was not contacted again for a home visit until three weeks post op and offered an appointment for a further three weeks hence. I knew how important physio was to aid recovery. I felt completely abandoned and called the hospital. I spoke with the head physiotherapist, who agreed and the following day he came to see me. He gave me more advanced exercises; standing on tip toe, marching and at five weeks, post op, I was strong enough to perform squats.

Had I left things in abeyance, I would not have been seen for five weeks.

Call the hospital and tell them of your concerns. Hip replacement and physio go hand in hand. It's insufficient to merely be sent home with a booklet. After seeing the physio, my confidence level was raised and many of my concerns eliminated.

Good luck. He who shouts loudest!

That should say physiotherapy. My iPhone has a mind of its own lol.

Hi there,

I am 3 weeks post op for double replacement, my appointment is booked for this Friday, Like others on here I was sent home with the sheet of exercises to do myself.

Why don't you ring and see if you can't be seen earlier?

Best wishes

Hi Julie

I had my post op physio at 3 weeks and another session at a further 3 weeks.

Thanks for the input guys. I think I should call the hospital tomorrow and see what has happened because I am sure I was told I would have physio 2 weeks after coming home.

Cheers x

I'm in the US and started therapy 4 days after surgery. I go 2x week to increase new exercises and to make sure I am doing exercises correctly. The sooner you exercise the quicker you advance.

I don't recall having any physio after my hip replacement. If you are walking OK it would just be a case of getting enough movement to (for instance) put your socks on without going too far. I imagine it's better doing that once the hip has settled a bit. But as with most things medical different teams will do things in slightly different ways.

Hi Julie,

Did the hospital send you home with some exercises to do?  Here in the US they make us get up and try and walk the same day as the surgery.  I think you have to keep moving.

Good luck with therapy!
