I'm near Brighton x
As someone said further down the thread, the regions
are different. I live in Wales and haven't stopped weekly physiotherapy, sometimes twice weekly especially early on, including hydro therapy. It does seem terribly unfair. I'd ask your GP for a Physio referral. Good luck with everything!
Hi Kelly
I went private and got physio while in hospital and then a follow up at three weeks along with a book of exercises at discharge . When I went for my follow up it turned out I was doing the exercises wrong! I've since had another 3 sessions and another 3 to get at 3 week intervals. Each time I go I get more exercises set at a different level. I'm now 13 weeks post op and doing well. I'm fact at work now but still am quite stiff from sitting to standing but improving each day.
It's a quite normal I'm told x
Hi detty im also 41! Theres so many questions i want to ask about walking etc and i know a physio would beable to answer them.its ridiculous that we have no physio afterwards! I will get onto my g.p tomorrow and get the ball rolling in the meantime keeping on with the exersizes and crutches.
I was up doing physio day 2 along with stairs etc.
Hi Kel, I'm in North London, and my experience was the same as yours. Sheet of exercises, and then went to my physio appointment at 6 weeks. She said I was doing fine, and discharged me. Usually if you go to your GP, you can fill in a self referral form for physio. I did that before my op when I was in a lot of pain. Usually quite a wait though. Good luck.
Yeah, sounds about normal to me. I had op 22 Sept and haven't seen a physio since despite the arthroplasty nurse saying I needed physio at my 10 week outpatient. Anyway, in my experience it takes 8 weeks to get a NHS physios appointment after GP referral, so may be best to find one yourself as I did yesterday. She said I have muscle wastage/weakness on op side, I'm still limping and leaning to op side and I now have exercises tailored to me until my next appointment in 3 weeks. I'm paying for this myself but that's ok. 😎
If you still have to see your surgeon then sk them. Otherwise go to your GP although it may take longer that way depending on the services they pay into .
Hi Kel.
I had RTHR in July last year and like you was given excersizes to do at home.
I'm 52 and reasonably fit, I had doubts about not having PT sessions under a physio with the NHS but tbh I just got on with the excersizes myself and pushed myself to walk as soon as I felt able to (I was on crutches from January)
Go at your own speed but at your age I think you will be surprised how quickly you can recover from what is a pretty major op.
Good luck with your recovery.

I think it depends on where you live. I live in Danmark and was given Physio training 2 times a week for 16 weeks. That was 2 years ago. I'm waiting for my next hip, should have done it last week but my blood pressure was too high. I was talking to my case worker about the delay and she mentioned my training after the operation. I don't know if it will be the same amount of time since the county is trying to "save money" but I am confident that it won't be less than 14 weeks. I know the training is available for any one at any age.
I'm really sorry to hear that you get so little help after the surgery. I think it's nice to be out and with others who have the same problems. It's not only training but it's an opportunity to openly discuss your problems with others.
Good luck
Same here in Australia. A sheet in discharge with 3 or 4 exercises on. Follow up with surgeon at 6 weeks I questioned lack of physio and he told me that walking is the best overall repairer and strengthened of your muscles. I had paid for physio privately because i felt I should be seeing one and have to say I felt it was a waste of money. I now go to aqua aerobics and feel it is doing everything I need. Don't panic about lack of physio, a lot of people don't use one.
Ha the same age! 😊 Which hip have you had done? Mine was my left, so glad I had it done I was in a bad way before, limping and in a lot of pain and bent over to the side 😔 But now I'm walking straight and no limp!
How are you feeling? Xx
Mine was my right hip.to be honest i wasn't in a dramatic amount of pain before the op but it needed doing and i would rather recover while im youngish.im doing ok i suppose, worried about getting addicted to the painkillers and not sleeping very well atall due to my lower back becoming painful because of sleeping in the same position.how are you doing?
Yes the sleeping is a nightmare to begin with, I was waking every two hours and really uncomfortable with stiff back! My husband says I look dead when I'm asleep as on my back ridged but trust me it's gets better I'm only waking once or twice now. If you can't sleep just get up walk around and watch Netflix 😊 Have you been told to stay on your back for 3 months? Xxx
I've got a g.p app on tues so i will push for a physio referal, even the nurse that changed my dressing was shocked to hear that so many people don't get it automatically.
The NHS is very poor at providing physiotherapy. I know it would cost money but it's so shortsighted as I'm sure people would have fewer problems post op if some physio was provided. I went to my local physio service in a nearby gym. They were excellent and each session cost about £35. It was worth it. Some places have hydrotherapy pools too which are a very good way to get moving.
To be honest, I was private, and not only did I think mine was useless, so did the physiotherapist that I use privately myself! Her comment was that it was at least 20 years behind the times! I found that she was worth her weight in gold
No not been told to stay on my back,i was told i could sleep on my good side with a pillow between my legs but its hard to control my bad leg while sleeping like that.
Went to the g.p yesterday to adk for a physio referral and he said he would do it but it would be a wait of 12wks which by then he said i would prob be ok.hes advised me to ring the surgeons secretary and ask for the referral which i done today.shes in turn talking to the surgeon and going to call me back.
I don't hold out much hope though as shes about as much use as a chocolate fireguard! And not atall people friendly!
12 weeks, what a nuisance. Good to contact the surgeon's secretary. Hope you get somewhere with that. Love your description of her!
