So iv noticed a lot of people mentioning theh get tests done just before their ops. What are they looking for in these tests and is there anything that could prevent you getting your op? Is there anylifestyle things you have to change before the ops?
Yes, smokers need to cut down/quit. Overweight people need to shed some weight. Diabetes needs to be under control. Alcohol intake needs to be cut back. Patients need to maintain their fitness levels by exercising moderately, within the limits of their condition. These are all true for most operations \I think.
Hope this helps
Whats classed as overweight. Im about 14 st but i think thats just a tiny bit over for my height. I dont smoke but i do like a drink so whats classed as cutting down? I usually have a drink every 2 weeks on a saturday.
The weight is measured against your height. Ask your practice nurse for info and advice. The guidelines for safe drinking levels for men and women are printed on the labels of wine bottles I think/
When are we supposed to find out all this info? When you get a date set? I suppose if your healthy in general nothing should go wrong, right?
Yes, as long as you are fit and well enough or the anaesthetic and the operation itself then it should go ahead as normal.
Good luck
Hi they took a swab to see if carrying MRSA and blood pressure must be OK. If either of these are a problem they will suggest treatments before they will operate. All this and blood tests were taken at my pre op assessment. Hope this helps and good luck
Is mrsa common? I had a blood test at the doctors a few weeks ago for something unrelated but it came back completely normal, same as blood pressure so i suppose i dont have much to worry about
Thats a relief then. Im such an over worrier hahaha. And thankyou
I had blood checks (a few weeks, and againa few days before op. Done by a specialised nurse who did nothing else, so no problems finding a vein. Has to be done tomaje sure you are healthy, and to check they have the right blood in the unlikely event you need a transfusion.
Swabs taken to detect MRSA - antibiotic course and retest until clear if you fail.
ECG - to check the ticker is OK
Blood pressure - you'll get used to this one , mine was checked hourly after the operation, reducing to 3 or 6 hourly.
Don't worry, it's all routine.
Best wishes
Graham
I remember when i was in hospital last they woke me up every hour during the night to check my blood pressure and temperature. Please tell me they dont still do that. But yeah hey sound like pretty standard tests although i dont rememeber having to get that done with any of my other ops
No mrsa is not common but you may not know you are a carrier. The test is just they give you a cotton bud to swab your nostrils. The hospitals have to be so careful to avoid infection. Do not worry about it.
Up your nose? Thats a new one hahaa
Oh yes indeed, that's what I had - hourly for the first night, and I have it all to look forward to again in January . At least the temperature is taken by shoving a probe in the ear now, so much easier than an old style thermometer

I had nose and groin swabs
Think last time i was there it was in the mouth. But urg i am deffo not looking forward to that. I get cranky when im tired
I do not like the sound of that
Sarah - I'm afraid the first night regular blood pressure's taken, I believe if you were to have internal bleed, dropping blood pressure would be the only indication that something was wrong, chances of that one in hundreds of thousands. You are sooo sleepy with pain killer medication after your surgery you are not aware most of the night, although being awake not unusual, from reading this forum.
You take the swabs yourself, just inside the nostril , it's nothing honestly and the groin one is also done yourself
Hahaha well lets hope the pain killers keep me knocked out hahaha
