My feet and ankles are sop swollen that it is now painful. I am walking around the house and garden without my stick, walking about a mile a day, or an hour a day. I use ice packs once or twice a day and sit with my feet up whenever I sit down to watch tv or knit.
For a few days now my feet and ankles and up my legs are very swollen, to the point they are becoming painful. I can't get any shoes on other than sandles with velcro fastenings, now even my slippers are hurting me. I have asked the physio, my own gp and my consultants registrar about this as it has been ongoing. They all say the same thing it will go away in time, that's all very well but at the moment with the hot weather as well it's getting worse..... Have any of you my friends got any more ideas please, I just don't know what else to do.
Thing is Gill you have to calm down , and stop doing so much, I just go out every other day, you should know better, you just think that the walking is helping but the rest helps too, I just slept 14 hours last night and again for 3 this afternoon...just stop getting on this more is better and please calm down.....Ian.
Ian I am 12 weeks on thursday post op .... so really I don't think I am doing too much others are doing more than me...... but thanks for your advice xx
Well Gill seems to me that you need a rest, and it is very close humid weather, you are a bit older than most as well, and things effect sensitive ladies, like you, in different ways, my wife is 14 years older then me...we have been married 23 years... just put your feet up for a day or a day and a half, put your feet in a deep bath of cold water, and try the Durban Cool Off Trick...It works in Durban...Phew it was out there, and I lived there for 18 years...works on the wrists too for a quick fix in a sink, just have to put ice in the water if you have some and it works better, sit in the bath for about 20 mins and refresh the cold water every now and then to keep it as cold as possible, just a heat swelling I think...
if if this is affecting both of your legs are you sure this is related to your surgery?? Thee are other reasons for the swelling....I would see your GP , your quite a way down the track now for this.
Some of it at least is probably related to the hot humid weather, make a note how much it alters when the weather changes. I am 4 months now and my operated leg and ankle has been more swollen this week, mind you there is a tendon graft in the ankle due to an accident in 1967, so it rarely is completely up swollen. As others have said, take it extra easy in this weather, others do, have a good siesta etc.
when it is cooler and it does not improve you perhaps would need to start asking why with a vengeance.
I would not have thought you should be suffering with swelling now, particularly if it is painful - I would get it checked out as there are other medical conditions that can cause this.
An hour a day, is quite a lot of walking. I don't do that much, although, I suppose it adds up round the house and garden.
Don't compare yourself with others - just do what is right for you. The hot weather doesn't help admittedly, but I would get it checked and do rest a bit more. In these hot countries, they all have a siesta and there is a reason for it.
Hope you have a better day
Kind wishes Linda xx
I would be resting up more if I had swelling, but we are all different
I'm in agreement with Ian here. I've had four THRs and each has needed different kinds/lengths of recovery.
I'm 3 months since last one and this time I've had to take it really easy. In fact, I've recently halved the exercises and walking I was doing, because it was increasing the pain. I feel much better. It's going to take longer, but my body just 'knows' it's the right thing to do.
My previous one was completely different. I recovered within a couple of months.
I would go to my GP, because if the swelling is on both feet and ankles it's unlikely it's linked to the hip replacement. At least ask to be tested for other reasons...
Hello Gill sorry to hear you are suffering. For what it's worth, I had swelling too when on holiday in Italy where it was 40c! It has gone completely now i'm back here in the cold so I would guess as everyone else says it is (at least partially) the heat causing it.
I'm also in agreement about the amount of exercise , I expected to be competely back to normal and doing everything at 12 weeks but have discovered that isn't always the case so take it easy for a bit as it usually helps. Hope you feel better soon
Thank you for posting - I have been getting sore at 6 weeks and getting frustrated...the recovery is taking longer this time and I dont have a good hip to support the recovery in the other one. In fact as I mobilise for the operated hip I provoke the other hip which needs to be revised after 20 months of constant pain since it was replaced. So I am back on the sofa - feeling a fraud with 2 replaced hips.
The honesty of the posts from you and everyone else helps remind me all to be patient and not to force the body as we need to to avoid setting up long term problems.
Hi my dear friend, so sorry to hear about yor swollen feet, seems you have done all the right things to try and sort this out, and as usual the midic's just feed you the platitudes , have you consisred it could be water retention, are you peeing less than normal? sorry to be personal, also do you take any other meds for an ongong condition? maybe you need to ask your gp if a short course od duirectics is called for,
I agree. Swollen feet and ankles are typically an indicator of heart problems.
keep in mind though millions of older people get swollen ankles & swollen feet and continue to lead a long life. My own father's heart was not at 100% and his feet and ankles swelled, he had to take water pills, and now my mother also takes a small water pill. My dad passed away at age 89 and my mom is still with us.
Having some impairment of your your heart is not a death sentence.
if both feet and ankles are swelling I would point that out to your GO and ask him to check your heart.
Thanks for that angle I am peeing more than I usuallydocos I'm drinking far more than I usally do. I am this afternoon going to lie on the bed for an hour as I did just after the op with feet raised and a good book, watch this space. If that doesn't change things I will see my GP but not until she comes back off holiday I don't really want to see anyone else as we have a good rappor. They don't seem as bad today but then again I have taken it really easy and done nothing
Sorry you are suffering I noticed my feet have swollen a bit due to this hot weather, but all you can do is rest and put ice packs on or get water tablets from the doctor, have you been doing too much walking
