Thigh pain after THR

l lifted some very heavy weight 5 months after left THR and 13 months after right THR. I immediately felt thigh pain on both sides and have been trying everything for two months to ease it. It is still same as when the injury occurred? Anyone have a similar experience? Anyone have an answer? I am 63 years old, both hips are uncemented and my activity level is way down due to what happened to me. Please give me some advice.

Hi Marge,

I've had thigh pain in both legs after THR x 2.  Last week my doctor recommended a deep tissue massage, which has helped immensely.  I have 3 more appointments, one each week for the next 3 weeks.  My thigh muscles have loosened up significantly since the first massage last Thursday.  If your pain is due to tight thigh muscles, I highly recommend trying a deep tissue massage.

hi marge,

welcome to our hippies forum. ...

I am not sure what you mean by lifting very heavy weight. ..are you a weightlifter or is it work related or shopping basket?

have you been to the doctor?

so sorry for your pain. ..

big warm hug

Hi Renee and thank you for responding.  I lifted a small desk which appeared light but wasn't. Doc says replacements look fine and wants me to see a back doc since I do have bursitis in both hips and spine looks questionable. Will get some PT for the bursitis and back doc will determine need for MRI or not. Still not out of the woods so keep in touch. Many blessings.

Where exactly is the pain, and how bad is it? What have you been doing to try to ease it? You say that your doctor says you have "bursitis" in your hips. Is that what he thinks is causing this thigh pain, or is that a separate issue? Glad to hear the implants seem to be ok, so it is probably soft tissue damage of some kind.

Thank you for responding AnnieK. Pain is from upper round hump over the bursa down the leg to about mid-thigh. He thinks I may have a spinal issue since implants look really secure. Pain level is about a 4 on scale 1-10 but I am VERY pain tolerant.  I feel it more when I walk a bit. I have tried icing, moist heat, supplements for inflammation, rest, not much has helped at all. Hoping PT has some answers. If it doesn't improve, it will make me question everything again.

Did you properly warm up first? Do a lot of exercises and walking? I had hip pain within the first 3 months when I walked 5 miles at to me at least at 65

There is a new term for what used to be called trochanteric bursitis. Here is a link to a Patient pamphlet about GTPS, https://patient.info/health/greater-trochanteric-pain-syndrome. If this is your problem, there are some ideas here about causes and treatment. I have a complication that I first thought was GTPS, so I have done lots of research about it. Since your pain first started after lifting a heavy weight, it is more likely to involve muscle/tendon tears than problems with bursa.

It is fairly common in women as we age. I currently have it in the sides of my thighs of both legs, and my sister gets it on and off in one or the other of hers. Completely separate from that, I have other muscle/tendon problems that aren't just painful, but that prevent me from walking without aids.

As the article says, it usually just goes away on its own, and first line for treatment is to decrease activity. There are a number of other treatment suggestions as well.

I read the article completely. Thank you. I see a physical therapist in 6 days. He will assess me, give me a program to follow for 3 weeks. If at end I have no improvement, I will have to beg for the MRI as nothing else will show what is truly injured inside. I also feel there could be muscle or tendon involvement. My limiting activity has made my legs feel just slightly better. I suppose those kinds of problems can takes months to remedy.

Th thank you Eric for your reply.  I have never had deep massage so I will definitely keep that in mind.  I will need to find out if my injury is with muscle, tendon, ITband, or bursitis. Hopefully massage can help in all cases. What is deep massage as opposed to regular massage?

Oinks! I was hoping to go back to weights once I was healed!? I'm 63yo female and weight lifting has been so good for me. I don't lift heavy, though. You've sure as eggs is eggs damaged something ... I think you need to have that seen so asap
