In July 2014 I had thr on right hip. no problems so in Sept 2014 I had thr on the left. Totally different story. From the 4 to 6 week mark after the surgery i have had mid thigh pain that gets worse the more active i try to be, to the point i cant walk at times. 2 different surgeons dont see anything on the x-ray they say it looks fine, but its not fine. They did a blood test . I have no infection. Tomorrow they are taking fluid off my hip. Still not quite sure the reason since i have no pain in the actual hip joint. After that they will do a bone graft. Has anyone else had this problem? i have titanium cementless inplants.
Hi tracy
Sorry you are having all this trouble.
I cannot understand why they are doing a bone graft. Is that to strengthen your thigh? Maybe you need to cross-question them a bit more.
I dont know.but i definetly will ask if it comes to that. I was hoping to hear from anyone who has had thigh pain but dr doesnt see anything on x-rays
hi tracy,
welcome to this loving hippies family - I am so sorry to hear of your ongoing pain ..
to have this for more than a year is terrible - did they do a scan ? I am sure they have looked at the "rod" in your thigh, right ? I am absolutely not a medical person, so apologies for not naming it correctly - I usually call it just "hardware" -
Right now I am 7 weeks post-op of 2nd THR and 7 months of 1st one and have pain in both thighs - also knees and shins ... still have to go to follow up appointment - I think mine is more the recovery process and a sign that I have to be more aware and go even sloooooooower .....
so, long story short, I am not at the one year mark yet -
good luck, darling - let us know how you're getting on ...
big warm hug
renee
I did not have thigh pain in my right one. You say you have thigh pain 7 months after in the first thr. What is your pain like?
I had right knee and hip replacement 6 months ago and since I started walking outside a mile a day I walk with a cane because if I don't I look like a penguin or a duck wadding around my right hip has started hurting me and I don't know why any ideas out there
hi Tracy,
it is like a dull sensation and tender to the touch. .right hip/leg
had not much time to heal properly because of the rapid
decline in left hip...
now both legs need to get strong ..learn to walk properly. ..
Please let us know how you're getting on,okay. ..
warm hug
Renee ❤
Is the pain centered in one place. Does pain run down your leg. I had alot of what I thought was Thigh pain, seemed to be very generalised in my upper leg and around my hip, but I couldn't put my finger on an exact place. The Dr's did another x-ray of hip and told me it was perfect. That didn't help at all, I wanted answers, I had the other hip replaced 15 months previously and knew what a good hip replacement was, and thats what I expected. This time I was i think on the other end of a good hip replacement, not sogood for me. After investigation it was found I had gained 3/8 inch after surgery and this was adding extra stress to my spine and I developed sciatica, confirmed by x-ray I had a bulging disc in back. In my non medical trained opinion you need to establish if you are a little longer on your new THR side, if so easy answer is a shoe lift on opposite foot, that may solve the problem of the pain, but you need to find out how much difference you may have. A Long Leg X-ray will wither confirm or deny the problem, or like me you will find out you have a natural difference as wellas a surgical difference, you only need to account for the surgical difference, as the natural you have lived with your entire life. Apparently we all have natural leg length differences, but how much is the interesting issue. I have 3/8 inch naturally below my knee. and 3/8inch added by surgery. My lift is only 3/8 inch for my opposite foot. For me heated pool, doing my exercies 3 times a week is the answer, it has helped to strengthen my leg, but has aslo strengthened up my back, and the sciatica has settled. Fingers crossed. I hope this ramble is some help
Tracy - easy test for leg length discrepancy or length added during surgery, is --- you need someone else to help you with this - get down to your underwear, stand in your bare feet on the floor, keep your knees straight, put a tape around your waist, or the band of your granny undies will do, Is hip on one side higher than other, its easier to see from behind, and your helper has to stand back a few feet. your hip bones at waist should be level with the floor, but only if you don't have a natural difference. again hope this some help
Hi Tracy
I'm now eight months post op on left THR. At around six months post op I developed excruciating pain in my thigh and down towards my groin area. I couldn't lift my left leg off the bed and getting in and out of bed or the car was very painful. After an X-ray it was discovered the bottom of my spine is damaged through wear and tear which in affect has damaged the nerves which run down my thigh....not sure of the correct terminology! I asked why this should happen, was it just a coincident that I've had a hip replacement? I was told it was a combination of new hip, longer leg, bad knee, walking badly to compensate, etc., etc.
l'v been told the pain will ease eventually. In the meantime I'm having Physiotherapy to help strengthen my tendons, but it won't cure it. I'm also now waiting for a new knee!
If I where you I would ask for more info before having a bone graft, sounds scary to me!
I was told in the first instance to lots of exercise but now I've been told I've done too much....so take it steady and 'gently does it'!
Hope you improve soon 😃
Linda
Linda - I feel for you, see my previous post lyn1951. The attitude of the hosptials and physio's seem to be, you'll adjust to leg length difference. Yeahh right, most of the people who are saying you'll adjust seem to be in their 20-30 age group, and have never had arthritis. I believe they are completely wrong. They kept telling me i would adjust, or they completly ignored the difference in leg length I had after surgery. I am now told I was lucky I didn't damage my back to badly, or they denied there was any link between leg length and back pain, but there are plenty of articles on the internet if you type in "leg length discrepancy + sciatia", from university websites, not a forum like this, not that I'm critizing, but I did end up squishing a disc in my back, and as above it is bulging and causing acute pain (or was), only with research, on the internet, have I been able to work out my own salvation, which I have had confirmed by an independent physio. When I read you posting out to my husband, he said your posting, NO darling, another poor person with the same problem. Swimming only answer for non-weight bearing exercise, has helped me no end.
Hi Lyn.....thanks for your reply. I think perhaps we're of a similar age, (I was born in 1951)!
Everything you write sounds so familiar. Leg length doesn't appear to be an issue with 'the experts' does it but I know when I have the risers in the shoe of my shorter leg, I can walk more comfortably and the pain isn't so bad. Trouble is it restricts me to one pair of shoes as I have to stick the risers in.....otherwise they move around in the shoe.
When on holiday last month I did a lot of swimming, and yes I did breaststroke, even though I had been told I wouldn't be able to, but I was fine and swimming definitely helped to ease my symptoms. Trouble is, now I'm back home, getting to a swimmering pool regularly isn't quite so easy!
I'm hoping once I've had my new knee I will be able to get back on my bike!
Well I had better get on with my exercises....happy times!
Hello again Linda - Yes I too was born 1951, Coudn't agree with you more about the so called experts. I had a young Dr tell me to my face that it didn't matter at my age that I couldn't wear my nice dress shoes any longer. GRRRR he only made me mad with that statement, I have filed a compliant with the ombudsman office, so far I have been notified that they are taking my complaint seriously, he has not only offended me he has broken the patient care rules, they give you a hand out about patient rights when you enter hospital. Your local physio should be to refer you to a chiropodist, (hope my spelling correct) they are the experts in shoe inserts, once you have your first correct fitting, you can then shop around like I have. I have been lucky enough to track down the shoe makers shop who does the shoe work for the hospital, he took a look at my reports from x-ray clinic, for my LONG LEG X-RAY, yes it is a specific x-ray from the floor to above your waist, and after begging GP, and a big argument where I woudn't back down he ordered the x-ray, and wished me luck finding a clinic that did it. many phone calls later, I found a clinic 10 minutes drive from where we live, and has adjusted my runners for $45.00 australian, thats about 20 pds, compared to what the chiropodist at $250.00 a bargain. the other insert is a sloping one, that gives me 10mm or 3/8 inch at my heal, and slopes gently down to just short of my toes. I was able to buy that at the local chemist shop, but it doesn't fit all my shoes. but I have enough to go on with. Hope I don't get invited out to something formal, I have no shoes that will work for me, need to get some of my nice shoes builtup or adjusted by the shoemaker.
Hi Lyn.....I don't consider myself 'old' at 64...I'm young at heart and because of that I also like to look good and feel good about myself. What a rude young doctor you had, I'm glad the authorities are taking it seriously.
I've bought myself some shoe support inserts which raise me up, but only wearing in the right shoe/boot. They certainly help. I can't wear high heel shoes anymore though because of osteoarthritis in my big toe, among other places .....life's a bitch eh! I'm not worried though as there are some lovely flat shoes for sale these days and as I'm tall I can get away with it.
This 'long leg X-ray' m'larkey sounds interesting, don't know if they do them in the UK.
I have. I had a replacement of the original 2yrs 6m after.
Still in recovery
byteme what happened? Did they find a cause? And you are saying you had to redo it after 2 years?
