Swelling

Hi, I posted here on Sunday 5 days post op about a blister that developed above my ankle..  Well it was a roller coaster couple of days, with emergency doc coming out after a ten hour wait at three o'clock Sunday morning, followed by my own GP on Tuesday, now daily visits by district nurses.  The blister itself grew to the size of an orange, filled with bloody fluid(due to Warfarin apparently) and ruptured on Tuesday morning and was drained and cleaned by nurse.l'm now left with a huge wound where the blister was, which won't heal until swelling in foot and leg subside.  Question I have is when did people's swelling start to reduce?  Ideally if I was to lie in bed all day it would go down a lot quicker, obviously I need to keep as mobile as possible due to previous DVT and of course new hip!

Hi Kevin

Was your DVT diagnosed before Hip replacement.

Dvt was five years ago, just on Warfarin as a precaution post op for three months.

I was booked for THR in September, but cancelled due DVT. On Warfarin for six months, before being reconsidered for THR.

The swelling I have now is post op swelling in leg, foot & ankle.   Just curious to know how long other people had swelling for and how long it was before it started to subside.

I think mine started to go after about day 7, but I have been very lucky all-round.

HI, I had bad swelling from knee to ankle, I was released on a Friday and back to hospital on Monday for 3 more days, no DVT just extreme swelling, was told to elevate leg above the heart and ice often. I bought a hip/back pillow that is angled up to 12" high it was a life saver I slept that way every night, the swelling was gone within 2 weeks. Good luck.

Thank you. I've had no advice apart from the lovely nurses who ideally want me to sit all day in bed. They aren't experts in THR, just dealing with the aftermath.

Hello Kevin

I am almost 8 moths post op on the first of my two hip ops. I still have a lirrle swelling on my ankle of my operated side. If you get 2 of the cusions you sit on off the sofa. Lay on your back with your legs on those. Make sure the whole lower leg is supported by the cutions from the knee to your heels and the swelling will go down. Do this every time the swelling is bad and put ice packs / packs of frozen peas on your ankles and knees. It will hel a lot. Good thing is if you do your foot pumps ( pump your feet up and down medium speed ) while your legs are rasised it doesn't matter how long your layed down for as long as you keep your circulation going. Speaking from experience as I had rerally bad swollen legs after my right hip collapsed only a few days after my left hip was done. The pain was beyond anything I had ever had before and took me 3 weeks layed in bed before I could move except to go to the loo. The foot pump excersizes helped me avoid DVT while I was layed up.
